I have an i7 6410, 4GB ram, 128GB SSD, Windows 7, 64 bit, nvidia graphics. Each time it boots, a few seconds after the desktop is visible, the display gets dark momentarily then restores. Twice, once a month ago when it was nearly new and again today, the blackout lasted longer and included a brief interval when the display seemed to be completely off, then it restored itself. Both times this happened a message window appeared saying something to the effect that the nvidia graphic card had failed and had reset itself successfully.

Does this need attention or can it be ignored?

    Thanks.

my 6410 does the same blackout every time it boots, i don't think its anything to worry about. Also, I would get the latest video drivers and see if that helps stop the error msgs.

Run Memtest and see if your memory passes at least 2-3 passes. Also have you tried purging the Intel drivers from your system and reinstalling?

I installed a newer set of nvidia drivers (7-31-10). It still blinks just after each boot. I'll have to wait on the errors.

    Thanks!

My bleeding edge E6400 Vista with nVidia would reset to the default VGA driver every now and then. The problem went away after a clean install with the latest drivers some 6 months later. Eventually installed Win7 and have still not seen the problem again. So me, I would suspect a driver issue and expect to re-image the system.

The screen flash that occurs every-time you boot, is Dell Control Point changing your resolution to the exact same resolution. It's stupid.
The reason it does this, is because it has a power option which reduce your screen refresh rate to 40Hz when on battery. But when you are plug-in or have the option disabled), it still switches the resolution from 60Hz to 60Hz. So the screen goes black and back up

Well I just got my E6410, I love it. I took a quick look at the default Win7 32bit install and quickly stuck in my Dell Win7 64 bit OS disk, much better. Shipping was an adventure with the weather.

The laptop is quieter and much faster then my old desktop, I am glad I made the jump. Not bad for $683 some shipped. Just gotta get the silly refurbished sticker unstuck from the bottom. LOL
