Holy crap?! Maybe it's a special....or...perhaps larger customers let Dell know that they were displeased with the physical design direction....

You know, our Dell rep brought a couple of the new E series computers for us to see and use. Almost everyone that saw them and used them really liked the new direction. You put one of the new E6x20's next to a E6x10 and the 10 looks very plastic. Put the new E6x20 next to a Thinkpad and you finally see a Dell that is better built than a Lenovo.

Don't go assuming larger customers don't like the direction. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean others don't.

I have so much respect for anyone that quotes Jeremy Clarkson in their Sig. This is not meant to be as personally pointed as it reads. Just let me know what you think of the new E's when you see one in person.

You know what I find really funny (dripping with sarcasm) - That Dell found a way to put two USB 3.0 ports into the Inspiron 15R (which is much cheaper than the E series) but business users have to pay extra to buy something that uses up the entire modular bay.

Sometimes I really wonder if Dell, HP, etc are just taking advantage of the fact that a larger number of business users have no clue about technical aspects of laptops.

I suspect you select it based on if you have a dual core CPU (35W) vs quad core cpu (45W).

Dell doesn't just throw stuff stuff around and hope it sticks. And one doesn't have to look long at the hi-res pics of the E6420/E6520s to immediately realize that they are very deliberate and thoughtful upgrades to the previous models.

The 5420 looks like much less of a compromise from the 6420 than the 5410 did compared to the 6410. In fact I'm finding it difficult to locate the $130 worth of difference, other than the red highlight around the keyboard, ha. (this is just after a cursory glance at the specs, though)

5420 with display upgrade and backlit keyboard, i5-2410, for just under $700. Not shabby.

I don't quite understand the price premium on the 13.3" (6320?), if the prices I've seen are accurate. I'm a bit sad since I preferred a 13", but imo they ruined the new Vostro. I suppose 14" isn't a giant difference.

Yes, but remember that extra "$130" buys you a 3 year warranty as opposed to a 1 year warranty. Also, consider how hot the E5410 seemed to get in the Notebookcheck test. I always wondered about the differences between the E5410 and E6410, since the e5x10 series wasn't reviewed until very late the model range. Personally, I'm glad I didn't buy an E5410.

Of course, the new E5420 has a better, more convenient, more attractive layout than the E6420. The real question is whether the case quality is the same? Is the E5420 really "all metal" in case construction? Just as important, is the cooling system on par with the more expensive E6420?

I'm hoping to see some sort of reasonably early review for the E5420/E5520, but I don't have much hope.

Yes, it's a great mystery. Granted, the 14 inch Latitude models sell in larger volumes than the 15 inch models, and much, much greater volumes than the 13 inch models, but all the same, the price premium doesn't represent the real costs.

I have found when it comes to laptops you have small, cheap and fast. Choose 2. :)

Hah thanks, you've got me all wrong though. I LOVE the looks of these systems. They look modern and I like the different patterns and textures they've chosen. You'll get no complaints from me. :)

and yes, JC is the shiz.

Well, then, you need more self-confidence than to suggest, "perhaps larger customers let Dell know that they were displeased with the physical design direction." :)
