    LPTP,

I disabled LAN through the Bios and it still exists. Latency spikes over 10k every 30 secs.

Same here, in my case it's not connected to the LAN either. Definitely the wlan. Man, this issue is so annoying!! At least I found the culprit now.. not that it changes anything.. -.-

Yeah the problem seems VERY widespread. And the nr. of different reasons for it seems just as large as the nr. of people experiencing this issue. I wonder if it's confined to Dell laptops...i haven't seen other brands with this AFAIK but there are a lot of different models with it. I would expect to see new latitudes and precision share it because they're so much alike but studio's and XPS's are also experiencing this?

DPC reports bad latency (over 10,000) on my E6400 but I have yet to hear it.

Same high latency here (with Matrix Storage 8.7). It can be stopped by removing the optical drive. However, I have no audio problems.

If WAN is a cause of crackling, does it depend on the make / model of wireless card? I have the Intel 5100. Also, I have no WWAN.

Well I guess I'm glad I went with the 5300. I have yet to experience high latency or audio problems in XP on my m4400.

Also, I never did install Intel Matrix Storage when I did a fresh install of XP. The Dell XP sp3 install disc included AHCI drivers, so it wasn't necessary. Unless I require it for something else?

Did you run the DPC Latency test applet and what does it report?

We're up to 22 E6500's at the office now.

For the most part they've been ok save for some annoying quirks with Dell's CP. Anyways onto the audio issue.

All 22 systems we custom imaged with a fresh Vista x86 install using certain Dell stock drivers. They've have had no audio issues at all, 15 of them are run on Dell E docks connected to various speakers - Bose, Altecs, Logitech etc.

Late, the week before last we ran system wide updates to include some of the latest Dell drivers. By Tuesday last week we had 17 users emailing complaints of crackling and distorted sound. Gahh!

After a full day of troubleshooting (hey tunez are important in the workplace!), we tracked it down to Intel's drivers (Dell 8.7.1007)
Restoring to the 8.2 drivers brought everything back to normal. The latest IDT HD drivers 6.10.6124 are installed. WiFi i5300 is enabled a/b/g/n as is the DVD RW TST RW TS-U633A. All systems are in stock IRRT mode and have onboard Intel IGP x4500HD.

    Hope this helps.
