Is everyone running IRRT? I thought most had it set to AHCI, could just be my mistake though.

Anyway...it's not what you set it at that causes problems, it's the driver for SATA operation, regardless of what mode you choose. And that again is only true for the cases where the problem isn't solved by disabling LAN, disabling Modular Bay, removing DVD drive or any of all the other options

I removed my DVD drive and my latency immediately went down into normal ranges. I want to get rid of the 8.7 version of IMSM and go back to 8.2 if possible, since it looks like my problem resides here.

Does anyone know where I can download an older version (8.2) of IMSM? I can't seem to find it on Intel or Dell's site.

I have a Dell 1510 mini card and when I disable the Wi-Fi thru the switch or device manager, the crackling stops. So its surely the Wi-Fi connection (and not tied to a particular brand). Might be the signal interfering with the sound or something?

I also could narrow it down to the wlan. They are going to send me a new one, I doubt it helps though.

    I found out something interesting.
Since removing the dvd-drive helps, I wondered what happens when I insert a disc. The drive spins up and down again. The latency-peaks disappear and crackling does likewise. This leads me to the conclusion that maybe its some software is checking for inserted media causing the system-wide latency peaks, maybe by stressing the (obviously not perfect intel driver) to much. It could possibly be windows itself and some setting makes the difference.

About the WLAN: Disabling the A-band often seems to help. I did with my Dell 1510-WLAN. Have you tried that, wasabah?

    Edit:
Awww. . Pain in the .
I disabled on option for windows checking for media change with a 3rd party tool. Restarted with the dvd-drive inside. Now I got no crackling as long as the drive (without media) is in the system. When I remove it... crkrkrkrkrkrr
    Hot trail?

Yep, of course. Makes it a bit better, but not really.

Interesting observation regarding putting a disc in the optical drive. However, when I try this I get 5 or 6 bars in the green zone and then the red ones re-appear.

So I next tested the effect of an eSATA HDD. Connecting this did not cause the latency to drop into the green zone, even temporarily, with or without a disc in the ODD.
