I was shipped an E6500 by Dell Service to replace my D830. In theory the E6500 is a slightly "better machine", but the display is only 1200x800; my D830 had a 1680x1050 display. The problem is my primary business Application has several screens that simply don't fit on 1200x800. Yes, I could go through and re-size all of the controls on the various forms (I wrote the software), but that really isn't what I want. I can order a WUXGA screen for the E6500 for ~$250, but that's a lot...

I am curious if the 15.4in Screen in the D830 would work in the E6500? Obviously I can take both apart and determine if it would fit, but I really do not want to mess up the E6500....I am either going to have to send it back to Dell and insist they repair my D830, or replace it with something that has a higher screen resolution, OR I am going to have to find a higher resolution screen for this E6500.

    Any thoughts?

Ok, I have confirmed from Dell that the laptop will accept the WUXGA screen, theoretically w/o any problems. They want $409 + S&H + Tax, there is an aftermarket one available @ etech.com for $134.95 + $9.99 priority shipping. Anyone think of a reason NOT to order the aftermarket one? Dell was unwilling to sell me the WUXGA for the "upgrade price" of $129, imagine that!

If anyone has done a similar upgrade with or w/o success I sure would like to hear about it.....

Since they replaced your D830, they should have given you something that was at least equivalent. Call them and see if they can swap out the screen for free as it's what you should have gotten in the first place.

    Robin24k,

Thanks for the input, I tried that via their "chat line" and the guy told me the E6500 WAS an upgrade, lol, but he was unable to pull any info specific info from the service tags on the E6500 or my D830 because I haven't sent the D830 back. There is a "hold" on them until they get one back. I just needed to make sure that I would be able to upgrade the screen before I sent the D830 back. I would prefer it didn't cost me $140, but if that is the worst case then I am good to go. I can't argue with them until they get one of them back. I just knew that when the D830 left my hands I was going to be "stuck" with this E6500. As long as there is a reasonable upgrade path on the screen, I will send the D830 back and argue with them once they receive it.

I have read that the "screen cable" is different and will require replacing

, but the Dell CSR said it did not. I really would love to find someone who has done this and find out for sure. I am guessing that the cable really does need to be replaced....

If both screens are CCFL, you won't need to change the cable, that thread was referring to LED and CCFL screens. If you can find out what type of screen you have, it will narrow things down a bit.

At this point, since you have both, I think your best option would be to take them apart and see. There are way too many factors to give an answer (the E-series is a mess when it comes to parts, there are too many variants, colors, LCD backlight type, webcam option, etc.). The D830 should be pretty straight-forward to disassemble, but the E6500's bezel is a lot easier to tamage. It's the same basic pop the tabs and slide down, but when releasing the tabs, Dell says that it's particularily easy to damage the bezel.

I'm not positive about this, so don't quote me on it, but I believe it will not work. Your E6500 is likely LED-backlit and can't be replaced by a CCFL-backlit LCD.

    Craig,

Not having much luck with the PM, but I am interested, LOL. Usually one would find PMs in the User CP in V-Bull, but I guess I am just missing the link. Anyway, if you will e-mail me @ fish4fun2@gmail (.com) We can discuss a sale. My concern is that the e6500 I have is very certainly an LED lit screen, so If the CCFL inverter is not part of the screen itself then I will need that as well. I am also fairly certain I will need the cable (as pointed out in the thread I linked to).

    Thanks in advance,

    Fish.

I would actually submit an escalation. It boils down to the replacement system not being comparable. You should get the 1920x1080 screen as the 1680x1050 screens are no longer available.

Provided it's physically possible, you could replace the screen yourself, but two problems exist:

    1. If you damage the system, it won't be covered under warranty.

    2. If that screen goes out, it will be replaced with whatever the system shipped with originally.

    Escalation: https://support.dell.com/support/to...t/dellcare/outstanding_issues?c=us&l=en&s=gen

    Jason1214,

I plan to contact them as soon as they receive the D830 back, but until then they just tell me that the service tag for both laptops is "on hold". Hopefully they will "upgrade me"; that is certainly my first choice, but my guess is that it will be an uphill fight. I feel confident I can do the replacement DIY as long as I can get ALL the parts (I have done several dell laptop screens in the past, though not an e6500). Warranty expires in October, so not too long left on it anyway.

Thanks for the link and response.
