as the dramtic headline says i just went to log onto my e6500 and placed my finger on the FIPS fingerprint reader and it roasted me !

and it didnt even log me in either , but worst part is it made me recoil a little and the machine fell of my lap and the screen lid took a knock on the floor,
so i now have a cracked screen lid! , thankfully the screen is ok and im able to use the laptop

but this fingerprint reader is dangerously warm iv tried disabling everything in the bios and i cant get it to turn off/ cool down and now at log on it says connect fingerprint reader (although it says this regardless of what i have on or off in the bios now) i think whatever has happened it has shorted something in the fingerprint reader

any ideas what i can do until i can call dell to fix it ?

no just obscene amounts of heat from the surface of the reader , the laptop is otherwise performing as normal , this must be due to the new motherboard they put in a few weeks back ....

nightmare, my own laptop is attacking me !

    1. What's the power drain when you are running on battery?

    2. Will this trigger a recall of the the Dells with this same reader?

it may well mean a recall as its dangerous im not joking !

if i had a 9v battery handy i would put it in my IR temp gun and get a readout of the tempreture

but as an example i can just manage to place my finger on the reader for around half a second or less and that will cause a serious burning sensation

but id rather get the temp gun reading to give you the actual tempreture and i will try an get a photo of it while im reading it

oh and the power drain seems fine john i checked it and that doesnt appear to have changed , i just hope the thing doesnt burst into flames on me as i do need to use it :s

Im guessing theres a resistive current or part short circuit somewhere causing it to heat up.

Or it has a mind of its own and its trying to melt your fingerprints. (Great if your planning to commit crime)
