So, I just finished configuring my daughter's new Latitude 13 after wiping
everything and starting fresh. Win 7 Pro (32-bit, what Dell sent me).
Everything is fine except for the webcam.

On the drivers page for both the Latitude 13 and Vostro V13 there is no
mention of a webcam driver. I have the webcam and received the Dell
Webcam Central CD, which I installed, but it can't see the webcam. I
presume I just need the driver, but where is it ? I've search all over Dell
and can only find drivers for Adamo, Inspiron and xps (if I recall correctly).

There is no indication of a webcam in the Windows System/Drivers list and
the system isn't complaing about an unknown device. I didn't see any
setting in the BIOS setup concerning the webcam.

    What to do ?

(by the way, the Latitude 13 is nice enough and runs Office and surfing
    just fine).

If you have working/enabled webcam, seems like it should show up in Device Manager one way or another. I installed Win7 on my E64x0s, no Dell webcam driver required, and then installed Dell Webcam Central... webcam works.

Did your webcam work before you wiped it?

I have no idea, I didn't even boot windows before
    wiping the hd.

I seem to recall in the BIOS there was a setting to
enable the microphone or not but nothing about
    the webcam.

I'd call Dell and see if they can help you find the webcam and get it working. It could be missing, disabled, or defective.

First make sure that the webcam is physically present. It is usually in the middle of the top display bezel. Then check in Device Manager. There will either be an unknown device or it will be listed under imaging devices. If there is an unknown device then I wonder if the driver is included in the system software package (the one that should be installed before anything else). You will find it on the download site.

Next time I suggest you try the Dell factory installation and satisfy yourself that everything works before you consider wiping it. The Dell installations for business notebooks are relatively free of bloatware.

The bezel has the camera but there is no device that shows up in the device manager (even hidden ones). I just ran the diagnotics software and it doesn't see the camera either.

I'm going to have to get Dell to look into this <sigh>. This is my second straight new Dell Latitude laptop that doesn't work out of the box. Thank god for their onsite warranty work.

Download Microsoft Silverlight. Then open the application from the start menu. This will test the webcam and mic.

If the hardware cannot be detected then I wonder whether Dell is using the same bezel both with and without the camera.

Do the diagnostics list the full system hardware?

Well I hope I have the camera as it was specified in the configuration and dell did send me the Webcam Central cd along with the laptop. This is a new system, not one off the outlet.

I've gone through both BIOS diagnostics and the graphic diagnostics software that you can download from Dell's drivers page. There is no mention of a webcam, no test to run to check it.

I've expanded all branches in the diagnostics and Windows Device Manager including the USB hubs. No imaging device, no hidden devices, nothing remotely ressembling a webcam :(.

I think it's over to Dell to fix this one. Either the camera is not connected or is absent. If you want to check then Dell's instructions are here.
