I normally think like GK and don't want anything to do with factory installs. This time however I've been toying with the idea (as VeryOldGuy suggests) of letting my daughter use the thing for a while just to make sure that it'll survive a few weeks, then do a proper install. I make sure she keeps her personal stuff in a separate place (usually a partition) so it shouldn't be difficult to do it at a later date.

The Latitude 13 is a nice laptop from a physical point of view, it's light and thin, so very practical. The screen if fine and the keyboard is ok. It doesn't exactly scream solidity and durability, though, especially internally, so I'd rather not spend too much time trying to make it a dream machine.

Having to be at home for a tech to come and work on the machine is bad enough, not to mention spending hours on the phone with Dell, but I'm thinking twice about losing most of a day doing reinstalls (I'm slow and meticulous and backup up several times through the process).

A funny note on the L13 : if you turn off the wifi it also turns off bluetooth, unlike my E6410, so the mouse stops working. Battery life with it on is around 3 hours, but then my E6410 with its much bigger battery (6cell) is only around 4 hours.

First daughter's notebook was a rush at Christmas... Plan A use the desktop just did not cut it on campus. Second daughter's notebook was better planned... got it late spring, let her play with it, re-imaged it, and then let her work it out before off to campus.

Regarding the Wi-Fi switch, I believe the E6xx0 BIOS allows selecting which devices it will enable/disable, including BT. I have it set to not disable BT so that the mouse stays active. Perhaps same for the Lat 13.

IMO, a separate partition for certain types of data files is a good thing. See my post here. I'm not referring to re-mapping the user profile (documents and settings).

If you decide a separate disk partition is necessary, I've had good experience using the free Home edition of Partition Wizard 5.2 to shrink the Win 7 operating system volume (partition) to make space on the drive for a data partition.

Win 7 disk manager does include volume shrink functionality, but the native tools are often constrained by immovable/open operating system files (logs, memory swap files, hibernation files, shadow copy files, etc.).

Partition Wizard downloads as an iso, is burned on a CD-ROM, and runs live, which is to say Windows 7 is not running, so those critical files are not open.

    Good luck.

I also use Partition Wizard but the pro version. There's only one thing I don't like about it and that's that it makes no distinction between primary, extended and logical partitions and doesn't show existing ones on the map, so it's never clear exactly what is going on.

I create partitions for each member of the family but I also transfer "My xxx" folders to them along with email databases, bookmark files and the like. I see 'drives' as an extra level available to organize one's stuff. Why not use it. It also makes backups and reinstalls easier.

The windows 7 directory structure has gotten painfully complex, I no longer want to go anywhere near it. I install most programs and drivers to a D: 'drive'.

No doubt more info could be included in the disk map.

But, on the free Home version, existing partitions are shown on the map and the disk table has a row for each partition, and the value of "Type" column for a particular partition (row) is displayed as either "Logical" or "Primary".

AFAIK, if you are viewing partitioned disk space on the table (as opposed to unallocated disk space), "Logical" equates to an extended type partition.

The disk map and disk table both contain the partition label so it is easy correlate the row in the table with a particular partition in the map. In addition, you can click on a partition in the map and Partition Wizard will highlight the corresponding row in the table.

So they sent the wrong system :p

Wrong cpu, wrong keyboard, I won't even be accepting delivery but have the courier return it.

I guess they didn't even bother to look at the original specs just fired off the first one that came to hand.

I suppose I should have checked the order status before it was shipped but I didn't even know it would show up there until I got a call from the shipping company to say I'd get it tomorrow.

With all the money spent these days on ERP systems, it's difficult to understand how this is even possible.

Hopefully you will have a laptop before her graduation.

    It doesn't look likely :)

Ok, this is going to be a rant for posterity.

I've spent the better part of the week talking, emailing and chatting to I don't know how many Dell reps and _no_one_ is able to tell me what the status of the replacement is.

I've had four different reps tell me directly that they had no way of finding out what was going on. I just talked to a manager who said the same thing. I even got transfered to a poor guy in South America at one point. Emails get transfered around until they just die out. Dell's motto should be "Pass the Buck".

There has been a bit of progress in that they got the bad replacement system back which I'd refused delivery on (after the courrier hung onto it for more than a week).

I've been told that my case has been escalated (to where ?). I have a resolution number. But every path into dell leads eventually to a blind alley.

I'm starting to think I should just cancel the whole thing and look elsewhere.
    But where ? :(
