I had the same (similar?) problem, and solved it by installing both the Intel HD driver, and the Nvidia NVS 4200M driver. It seems that the E6320 laptop itself contains a 2-display Intel video card, and the docking station that I have (model PR03X) contains a 2-display Nvidia video card.

When I first connected a DVI monitor to the docking station (with only the Intel HD driver installed), the external DVI display was not recognized/detected at all. After installing the Nvidea driver (in addition to the Intel driver), the "Detect" button on the display settings dialog (Control Panel | Appearance and Personalization | Display | Change display settings) now shows 4 display boxes, two of them show my screens, and two say "Another display not detected". Also after clicking the "Detect" button, the Display drop-down shows the laptop screen as "1. Mobile PC Display", and the Dell 20-inch external DVI monitor shows up as "2. Dell P2011H", and there are two dropdown selections showing "Available Display Output on NVIDEA NVS 4200M" and "Available Display output on Intel(R) HD Graphics Family".

So, I recommend installing both the Intel HD and the Nvidia drivers, and see if your external DVI monitor starts working.

The above is not relevant here as the e6320 does not come with the Nvidia card, it has only the Intel HD3000.

    OP

    - Make sure you are using a 90w power supply
    - Also I would try using just a regular DVI cable, we have e6320's in our office and we run dual monitors each with a seperate DVI cables all day long no problem so I am 100% sure it will work

I really think its a cable issue if you have already updated the drivers and can ensure that you are using a 90w power supply.

    Right.

This is officially driving me crazy now. I have tried and exhausted every cable combination under the sun and still have had no joy. Alternative standard DVI cable was no good. I even tried another (third) dock to no avail.

My most recent effort was to try a DVI to mini HDMI cable to the back of the laptop itself eliminating the dock altogether. Nothing doing. This is especially weird as I know that port works as I hook the laptop up to my TV over HDMI regularly.

All I can assume is that there is some weird incompatibility between my E6320 and my monitor over DVI. As I stated before the monitor in question works fine with my old laptop/dock combination over DVI.

The only thing left to try is an alternative DVI monitor but I don't have access to one and it's expensive if it doesn't work.

Not exactly what you have, but it's worth a try:

    i5 2500K + Z68 Extreme 4 + HD 3000...

Supposedly downgrading the GPU drivers to 8.15.10.2219 fixed the DVI output in that particular case.
