You mention two operating systems: Vista Ultimate 64 (same as mine) and Windows 7 64.

For Vista 64 you can download HWmonitor from here. Click on the appropriate link on the top-left corner (either "setup" or 64-bit zip file depending on your preference).

For your comparison, my first E6400 (which had several problems including overheating, caused probably by a drop during transport to my home) had:

    - Idle: CPU ~38-40, GPU ~55-60, Fan: low speed normally, high speed under light load
    - Gaming: CPU ~60-65, GPU 105 (!!), Fan obviously on high speed

I asked Dell for a replacement, which they agreed. My new E6400 has:

    - Idle: CPU ~32 (~27 after undervolting), GPU ~41-45, Fan: off usually, low speed with flash videos
    - Gaming: CPU ~55-60, GPU max 80, Fan on high

I present these values for comparison. Note that my second E6400 appears to be particularly cool, most other people report higher values.

My E6400 has a P8600 processor. If you have a Txxxx processor you should have higher CPU and GPU temperatures, which is normal.

After you get HWmonitor, post your temperatures here and we'll see if it is normal or not.

my m4400 is running almost 10*c cooler at idle after i swapped the stock thermal paste for a good one. I havent tested it under load yet, but so far i'm very happy with the results!

Doh! That's just the sort of thing that happens when you have a fan blowing full steam all day.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit it is.

Also, at work I am running it in the docking station with one 24" monitor, nothing too special.

HWMonitor seems to be working nicely on win 7, i will be using it tomorrow to see if I can find any thing that makes the temperature high.

Those look like normal temperatures to me. Are you running the latest BIOS version? What is the fan speed that bothers you? (low or high)

EDIT -- related question: my HWmonitor does not show the battery information when compared to the image above. Why is that?

temps look ok. is the fan on high or low? if its making enough noise to bother you, i think you got a faulty fan.

HWMonitor reported my temperatures a lot lower than the Nvidia System monitor. I don't think HWMonitor is correct.

i dont think so, when the M4400 first came out someone measured it using one of those fancy thermometers and it turns out HWmonitor seems to be the most accurate for the current latitude/precision

I got bios 17 i think, and i dont think that the fan is faulty.
It is normal noise from a fan that is running at high speed.

I am getting from 60 to 68 degrees celcius on the GPU when idling in windows, this is probably what gets the fan going, since i never goe above 46 degrees on any cpu core.

    Have contacted dell support today.

Well that GPU temperature is what I get too. After some idling it's at 62 - 73 °C (undocked, on battery, no monitors).
