    bjovas ,
IMHO the dell's fan is not quiet even when it goes at ~2900RPM( 50%PWM). Don't worry, you're not alone. It irritates me too. Quiet fan = Scythe SFLEX 120 mm @ 800RPM. With 600RPM is completely silent for me. As far as GPU is concerned I strongly recommend you to force constant performance level = standard 2D with riva tuner. You can underclock core/mem and shaders if you want too. My config is E6500 P8600/4GB/NVS160/250GB temperatures can be found below. Notebook is new, manufactured in Poland. GPU temp. is noticeably higher than the rest of hardware just like in your case.

I forgot to add. Screen shows idle temperatures (listening to music, surfing the net etc.)

Tip no.2 Press Fn + Z when your fan starts working ;)

Let me know whether Dell replaced your fan!

Note that Dell released E6400 BIOS A19 on 1st December and it includes changed thermal rules. However, I can't see any significant difference: Scrolling around in Google Earth can still get my fan to go to full speed.

*** Edit *** There is a change: There is now a 3600rpm fan speed. I'm sure that my E6400 went from ~2900rpm straight to a noisy 4800rpm. Now I9KfanGUI is reporting 3000rpm and 3600rpm (somewhat less noisy than 4800rpm). Perhaps there is a further speed, but I don't generate enough heat to find out.

I have upgraded my E6400 to BIOS A19 today and I think it is an mprovement with regards to fan noise.
Instead of going directly from 3000 RPM to the very noise 4800 RPM fan mode at 50C chipset temp it goes to 3600 RPM ~49 C and then to 4000 RPM at ~52C. Not until the chipset reaches 55C it goes to 4800 RPM.

The 3600 RPM and 4000 RPM modes are a bit noisy it is still ok to do web surfing etc without getting too annoyed by the fan noise. The 4800 RPM mode on the other hand is very annoying.
