Yeah, changing simple parts (HDD, RAM, wifi at least) does not void the warranty and is super-easy. And here in Finland, not even the sales department is outsourced. Sales, customer support and the tech guy were all very Finnish :) (I think the tech was outsourced, but he was amazingly knowledgeable)

Actually the E6400 supports 8GB of RAM with 64-bit Vista but the cost of a 4GB stick is still quite unreasonable

I take it no one has a spare DSB coupon code handy?

Mine is now a couple of weeks short of 6 months of hard use and I still can't think of anything better for my needs. It is heavier than suggested by the specs but, at the same time, all the metal makes it feel to be the most durable of the innumerable notebooks that have passed through my hands in over 20 years. And probably the best notebook keyboard I have ever used.

I've just ordered the rubber bumpers to fix this.

This was fixed in a recent BIOS update. My E6400 (with Intel GPU) no longer has any issues with the 65W PSU. In fact, Dell should offer the 65W auto/air/AC PSU as an alternative to the standard PSU and not as an optional extra. That PSU helps bring down the travel weight.

dang it! I just got my e6400 and the first thing I see when I boot is this stoopid BSOD, "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer"

I have vista ultimate. I went into the bios and everything seems ok. I fear a memory problem. I ran the diagnostic but everything was fine. I pulled the ram sticks, switched them around, tried one at a time, still the same thing.

I don't even get to the reinstall screen.

    any ideas?

Everyone who has problems needs to download the A09 BIOS and use those. The later revisions all seem to be buggy if you ask me.

I've had no problems with the A11 BIOS, which was released in December.

Yet I've had my laptop freeze up when using A11. HDD/BIOS seemed to disagree constantly.

Prolly been answered before, but it's hard to get an answer on battery life without someone commenting that the tests were dubious.

What is a good expectation of battery life with an Intel gpu and an Nvidia gpu?

    Thanks

    With 6-cell battery:

Nvidia: on normal light usage, around 3.5 to 4 hours out-of-the-box (disabling Aero and other fancy stuff), closer to 5 if you do some tweaking, closer to 6 with hardware tweaking (undervolting, etc)

Intel: normal light usage around 5 or 5.5 hours, closer to 6.5, closer to 7.5 or 8 respectively (John, please confirm this?)
