It should not. Mayeb you are confusing with a different sound, look at the bottom of teh machine and see if you see teh fan blades on the fan whole... if you see them.. well its not turning.

That means the original owner of the laptop stole your Vista. This MIGHT cause activation problem when he decides to install Vista on another Dell machine. You should contact Dell ASAP (else it would be too late, and you'll be screwed)

Yes it. It's to allow the battery to slide in/out easily. Don't worry it will hold. I use it as a carrying handle (well, the 9-cell one). About all laptop that have a battery that sticks out, the battery wiggle a bit. Heck even on the Dell XPS 1210, which is discontinued, the battery was wiggling a LOT, but it never cause problem. My brother has it since it was release, and he travels and stuff. Never caused any issue.

Yes, also if they refuse, push the fact that you need the Vista disk calmly, talk to the supervisor too.
Remember, Dell might think that you token the disk, and just want another Vista disk with product key (as the product key is already on the disk). Which is understandable. So be very patient and stay calm, no mater what. I think you need to call Customer Service for this. Also underline that you just got the machine, or just opened it.

If that fails, e-mail: Michael Dell
    E-mail : [email protected]

It's good to be prepared :D
And if that fails too... well send your story http://consumerist.com/, and that will make Dell move their butt like if there was no tomorrow.

haha, good to know i have your support! Whos Michel?

Oh, also, i think that the fan is NOT making noise (im pretty sure the blades were still). i think its the 7200 rpm HDD working. is that possible?

Typo, sorry it's Michael Dell. He is the founder of the company.

Yes, it could be. I have a 5400RPM Hitachi HDD. Very quiet.

Hey folks, I'm going to buy a Refurb E6400 with the X4500, but I can't find a cheap model with a WSXGA+ screen. If I take the WSXGA+ screen from my old machine and swap it with the one on the Refurb, will it void the warranty on either machine? I know HDD and memory swaps shouldn't, but what about display swaps?

EDIT: And what about the keyboard as well?

I8kfanGUI should work - it works for me. Make sure you have enabled everything under options > status reading.

Then run the long wPrime test (make sure you have both CPUs selected under advanced) and watch the temperature go up and then the fan should come on at ~3000rpm (I8kfanGUI will show the speed). Then close wPrime and the fan should soon go off.

I suspect that the noise you hear is from the HDD. 7200rpm HDDs are nosier than 5400rpm HDDs. The HDD is rigidly mounted in the chassis which helps the HDD noise to spread. A few of us have put a layer of electrical tape on the edges of the HDD where it fits into the bay in order to reduce this transmission of vibrations.

Changing the hardware listed against the service tag could cause warranty problems for the computer, should it need service. I suggest you wait for something suitable to show up in the Outlet.

    John

You were absolutely right sir. The rpm was 0 @ about 35C, then shot up to over 50C (probably higher but i didnt check), and after a bit the fan rpm shot up to 3000 or so. Then i shut off the prime 95 test, and it immediately went back to 0 rpm. So either the i8kfangui is faulty, or this laptop has an insanely efficient cooling system (probably right).

I may switch drives later. Thank you SO SO much, i am finally relieved. :D
