can you remove the internal 56k modem (i assume it adds weight if you dont need it)? It was pretty hard for me to find exactly what i wanted as well, so i didnt mind paying a bit more when i found it (although i got it at a great price, if i forewent some features i couldve payed a bunch less).

    good luck!

Yeah, you can take it out. Take a look at the service manual: http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/late6400/en/sm/html/index.htm.

How long did it take you to get your unit from the Outlet, btw?

The cooling system is good (designed to handle T series CPU + nVidia GPU). However, the fan operating rules appear to be quite complex. The time for the fan to run after the temperature drops appears to be related to the time it took the temperature to build up.

Grab it quick! The keyboard may not be backlit, but you can get that separately if you want it.

anyone know if i can set it to not have to tap the trackpoint so hard so i can make it double click? the touchpad has this option, but the trackpoint only has a "faster/slower" on click or some such option, not quite the same.

also i should say that if you are worried about purchasing this laptop because of the audio, dont be. in my opinion the sound is actually really decent and loud.

Open the Dell Mouse control Panel, click on "Pointing Stick Settings". From there, look for the option "TouchCheck". You must click on "Apply" to set the settings and see the result. Huh... actually for some reason it doesn't work anymore for me... I mean it works but I see no difference when moving the bar... maybe I need to restart the OS (driver bug?!)

    So bought or abandoned?

    New subject:
I just noticed that my fan was running in spite of a CPU temperature of around 30C (and highest today of 49C).

I remembered the Fn+Z command to reset the thermal sensors, whereupon the fan went off. It's not a problem I have noticed previously. Possibly a new bug introduced by the A12 BIOS.

Sadly, I'll have to wait for the next coupon. $775 shipped is just too much right now, and I think someone bought my configuration. Eventually, when E6400 motherboards start getting out onto eBay, I might just pick up one of those instead of replacing the entire machine. Sometime in the future when less of my warranty remains...
