My idle temperatures are very similar when I use the E6400 undocked. Do you use a docking station?

    HOLY COW!!!

I was just playing Overlord (great game, BTW) on my E6400 while docked. At some point the game crashed and I was dumped to the desktop, where I saw my GPU temperature at 99ºC (NINETY-NINE) !!

I am quite sure this is unhealthy. I have since stopped gaming while docked, but even when undocked the maximum reached temperature is a scorching 92ºC... isn't this unhealthy?? Is there anything I can do? Is it worth a call to Dell support?

Note that I do realize that this GPU is not meant for serious gaming, but I did have Overlord at a low resolution and with every graphic detail at the minimum. And I always thought that if a GPU can't handle a game, it will stutter (i.e. low FPS), not heat up... am I wrong?

Using latest GPU drivers from Dell's website...

Try using the latest drivers from Laptopvideo2go.com, they might run a bit cooler and faster. Try reading the E6400 Gaming Thread that was posted awhile back on the Dell Latitude Forums.

I already tried those and the card actually ran hotter. However, I might try them again because I only had them for like 1 day. Also, the thread you mentioned talks about overclocking which will hardly help me reduce these extreme temperatures.

Could other users tell me their experience with demanding games? Did your card heat up this much?

Well, the thread is about overclocking, but it does cover updating to newer drivers for a bit. Well, I can tell you my GPU never stayed above 95 for very long, I think it mostly bounces around 80-90 depending on how intense the gaming is.

Do you use your computer with a docking station or undocked? If you use it undocked, since I use mine docked, that would explain my temperatures.

I always thought GPU temperatures were not supposed to go higher than 75º or 80º. Guess I was wrong?

I don't even have a dock. I believe the safe zone for GPU temps is all the way up to about 100 C. 90 is cutting it close, but it's not critically dangerous. My G1s used to always get that hot no matter what, and I gamed with that laptop for 2 years without any issues.

OK, I feel a bit of relief now.

Still I cannot help but think this is caused by Dell's choice to use a thermal pad in the E6400 cooling system. Has anyone here successfully changed the thermal pad for something else (a thick layer of thermal paste, or a metallic layer)?
