Arr I hated when this happen when I used XP. Basically what happen is XP does not allow the driver installer do it's job properly, because it has a hard time understanding what PCI-E is.

    - Go in safe mode, uninstall the drivers from there.
    - Go back into Windows normal mode, use a driver cleaner utility. And clean anything Nvidia related.
    - Use ccleaner (freeware, just watch out for the Yahoo toolbar check box in the setup) to clean your system and registry.
    - Restart your computer
    - Install Nvidia drivers.

Hope this helps. Just remember that XP (released in 2001, identical to Win2000 release in end 1999) does not like new technology (which is normal as it's super old). And your laptop is just that, new technologies, design for Vista/Win7 64-bit...

Yea well... I use proper OS. Not one that shove everything on the HDD despite having 4GB of RAM, one that know what multi-core CPU is and uses them and not just trow it's own process in either core, one that know what SATA and PCI-E is, SSD and I can go on with motherboard technologies.

This is the hard question... Go forward with Vista 64-bit and lose support for old specialized programs and old peripherals, or have an OS that does not like your new technologies. It was a hard choice for me in 2006. I said screw it in 2007 and got Vista 64-bit on my desktop computer. I learned to adapt, and find workaround for my peripheral (in my case it was just the printer.. I used the printer drivers from a different but same brand driver and it works).

Try the modified INF file from laptopvideo2go.com.

I tried 182.50 many weeks ago and I found it to be a bit incompatible; problems with sleep mode.

GoodBytes was right. I suspect that if i followed his steps from the beginning I would have successfully gotten any one of those drivers to properly install. At the time, i had just figured there was some incompatibility, but thanks to GB now i know it was just the way XP was handling the installation of the new drivers.

Uninstalling the nvidia drivers from add/remove then running CCleaner and rebooting was enough to get the new Dell video drivers to work. Thanks for all the quick responses.

@Goodbytes- Vista Biz did come loaded on my laptop actually but i dumped it pretty quickly after not being able to move around as quickly as i could with XP (mostly because i have used it for close to a decade). I did give windows 7 a whirl though and will be upgrading to that at some point in the future of this E6400s life cycle.

Maybe i should be using the windows 7 theme for XP to get me ready eh? Win 7 Theme for XP by Vishal Gupta

    Thanks again all.

Skipping Vista... the jump form XP to Win7 will be HUGE. Trust me on this one. Wion7 is more than a skin... it's really different! So if you say no to Vista little changes.. I would be REALLY surprised that you would even look at Win7. It comes down to, people want change, but does not like change.

If you bother to use Vista, you would see that you actually work way faster than XP. Here are 2 famous example that I use often. In Vista you want to run the third quick launch icon.. no problem. Win key + 3. No mouse!
You want to open, let's say Firefox, and it's not in the quick launch bar. You can do Win key, and type directly in empty air, "fir", then ENTER key, And boom Firefox opens. No mouse needed.
Let's say you want something in a file (including Office files, and I even think PDF, and tags set on a files (because you can do that), you do Win key and type, and see the results instantly of all related files, excluding system files.

This is just 2 of many features of Vista that allows you to work faster.

Also XP support finishes next week. Microsoft will stop releasing any updates for it. It will only release patches that it judges crticial otp pay attention to. Source: http://www.dailytech.com/Mainstream+Support+for+Windows+XP+Ends+Next+Week/article14797.htm
