hmm, i wonder if i have a hardware problem then -- I am only getting a black screen. I have tried using skype. do you guys have the webcam software installed as well? or just the drivers?

edit -- if i try to install the dell webcam software, it returns an error -- setup could not detect any dell webcam central. at a closer look, it looks like it is an update which doesnt apply. so for those that have gotten it working, what did you do?

Windows 7 might have installed the drivers, I can't remember. You can certainly install the drivers that came on the Dell CD. Those should work.

I don't have any webcam software installed, other than Windows Live Messenger. Do you get the blue LED next to the lens coming on when webcam is turned on?

I would highly recommend upgrading to SSD. It's my favorite thing about my laptop. Speed's amazing (after you've made some adjustments to XP or Vista to optimize for SSD), most of the time my computer's absolutely silent, and I love being able to move my laptop around without having to worry about scratching the HD.

Yes, I agree, although I meant to ask whether this particular SSD (Samsung MLC) is a good choice. That is, compared to the OCZ Vertex and its clones. The Intel's are much more expensive.

It's not a very good choice. It is not even a huge step from a very good 7200 rpm regular drive from what i see in the stated transfer rates.

Btw this series MMCRE64G5MPP stayed in production only a couple of months being replaced with a new one pretty rapidly.
P.s. i found it even cheaper doing a little bit of search

From what I have read the Samsung is one of the better SSDs. There's more about SSDs in the hardware forum.

The transfer rates of SSDs may not be much faster than the maximum transfer rate of a fast 2.5" HDDs, but the HDD slows to about 50% at the slow end of the disc. The real benefit of SSDs is the <1ms access times - no delay while the head has to move and wait for the data to come round.
