I'm not that optimistic. But I plan to be VERY annoying until Dell fixes this.

The Dell tech told me that each of these motherboards is quite expensive, something like 700 euros. Can anyone confirm this? If it's true, they are probably already losing money with me, and it won't stop here if the overheating persists...

As Lucy (Charlie Brown's friend) says: "I feel mean today."

Maybe no 700 Euros, but the motherboards can cost alot. Since the GPU and CPU are soldered onto the motherboards, it can be quite expensive to replace them. That is one of the downsides of having them soldered. If you're so unhappy with the Nvidia GPU, I suggest you look into the Intel Graphics.

If only dell used a copper pad instead of the thermal pad, the gpus wouldn't be overheating.

Edit: I just thought of something else that might help your temps. If the same heatsink is used for the cpu and gpu, then underclocking and undervolting the CPU should theoretically bring some benefit

Newtons law of cooling states that the rate of change in termperature is proportional to the difference between the temperature of the objects. A cooler heatsink means faster transfer of heat from the thermal pad to the heatsink which means faster transfer of heat from the GPU to the thermal pad. The difference might be negligible though.

I just got a coupon for 20% off any Dell Small & Medium Business LAPTOP purchase. Good for any laptop purchase through Dell S&M Biz... not Dell Outlet, not Dell Consumer, just the small and medium biz NEW LAPTOP purchases only. (latitude, vostro, precision). It is valid 4/16/09 through 4/29/09 and it is for NEW laptops priced $699 or more. Before taxes, fees, s/h. I know this will help someone out a lot. shoot me a PM and I'll give it to you for $50.00, it can be used on multiple laptops up to 5 total so 699.00 (or more) x 5= $3495.00 (or more) worth of purchases... that would save you $699.00... let me know through PM. it is only valid through 4/29/09. even if you bought 1 laptop at 899.00 at 20% off you would save $179.80...

It makes no sense, because I for one can overclock my GPU pretty high and I STILL don't have such high temperatures. If you complain about the same issue again, they should send you a new system. (well I don't know if it's refurbished).
I think that Dell received or produced a batch of bad GPU's. That is my guess. If so, you are best to wait some time. Usually the parts that the technician receives, is not the new stuff (to the main board might be faulty again). If a new system is not in order, then request that the machine base be build and tested over there and send you the whole thing.. all it need is to add some parts at best (ie: wireless card maybe). Well, don't take what I said seriously as I have no clue if they can do that.

But something is definitely wrong. Thermal paste/pads should not take time to take affect. They should work immediately. The technician probably said that in the thought that an air bubble is trapped and be released, but this is unlikely (unless he miss attached it). When I build my and others desktop computers, I don't want several days before testing it. I stress that that machine to check for proper thermal management and stability.

Are you really selling a coupon? That's ridicules.

Also about that overheating issue. I still don't think it's as widespread as you think it is since there's only a few very (exposed) isolated cases that don't seem to get better even with motherboard/GPU replacements. Could those just be lemons?

    Are you insulting us?
Do you think we need coupons to get deals? A phone call away can get you the same or better deal(s). You think we are stupid consumer, that you can take advantage of?

I don't mean to insult anyone at all. The Dell coupons were widely available over the past few months but up until about a month ago I haven't seen these around. And this is a special coupon, it's not just for 1 item it can be used on multiple quantities. It's a great deal and if you took offense I apologize, but didn't mean any offense or to sound like I'm taking advantage of people. I just know that this particular coupon is very hard to come by. If you view my other posts you know I contribute a lot to this board so please don't call me out like I'm a bad guy. I provide a lot of useful content on here and many times have donated my 10 and 15% off coupons but this particular one is a lot better than most as I got it from customer service directly for an issue, i'ts not one of those 'generic' coupons. So if you're interested great, if not, it's ok. Again, my apologies to those who read it as if I'm trying to take advantage.

You have got to be kidding!

The Dell Outlet coupon for Latitudes is available at the Outlet's main page:

    http://www.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/spring_clearance?c=us&cs=28&l=en&s=dfb

Free, and everyone can order as many Latitudes as he or she wants.

Even if it's an exclusive one-time-use coupon, you can buy it from eBay for $1 to $3. How can anyone possibly think they could get $50 from a fellow member by selling something that he, along with tens of thousands of people, gets free?

If anyone wants to get coupons through email, just register at Dell.
