Btw, I have a question. My computer doesn't seem to be lowering the refresh rate. Its stuck at 60hz. Is anyone else with the 160m able to get to 40hz refresh rate?

It has nothing to do with the video card. It's your display.
I have the LG screen and I can set the display to 40 or 60Hz.

Do you have a display driver installed? Or are you just using the Vista one? I have the standard LED screen and hardware info says its an LG.

Thanks Theros and happyzor for replying!

Actually, after further testing I'm still getting over 100ºC and downclocks, so I am not being picky. However, things are better than before, the downclocks happen more sporadically. Not sure why I only got to 95º that time, must have been an easy to render part of the game. And the tech did say to wait a few days, so I cannot jump to conclusions just yet. But akwit's case makes me a bit pessimistic.

I have been downclocking my GPU and I think that's what I'll do. A minor downclock (to around 80% of full clocks) should do.

out of curiosity, do you have a good reason to trust that number? and might it actually say ... 102.0? If it is reading that, it is a false reading, and is a problem with the driver. Are you using the dell-provided drivers? or some from lv2go.com? I can help you figure out the right one to use, but i find it hard to believe you are getting the GPU that hot.

Well, now that you mention it, I merely use HWmonitor because it seems to be the most popular program to measure temperatures around here. I use the latest drivers from the Dell website.

Any advice on which program I should use to measure temperatures and which drivers are best is gratefully appreciated! However, since the GPU does downclock occasionally (used to be around every 2 minutes, now it's around every 10 minutes or so, I haven't tested much yet), I think there is still a problem regardless of the measuring software and/or drivers. Which, like I said, might solve itself over the next few days.

Use Everest instead. I already fell with some GPU temperature porgram that said my Geforce GTX 260 on my desktop, was at 200C when idle. Which is impossible as at 95C the video card shutdowns. As for laptops it's 100C (Quadro's can manage to be hotter than the geforce version (one reason why Quadro's are more expensive than Geforce's despite being based on the same chip).

OK, I'll check with Everest and post back. Thanks for the tip.

EDIT -- just remembered that I double-checked with GPU-Z which always agrees with HWmon and disagrees with Everest...

GPU-Z and HWMon are free utilities, just like my utility that i made for you guys, it's not 100% perfect because I dont' have the resources (hundred of computers) nor time to test everything under every possibility and driver versions. Everest in the other hand, is a paying software, they have the resources and capitol to make a good software (that is why you pay... or use the unlimited trial version which is good enough for your needs).

Happy that reinstalling works for you. I just installed 7077x64 on my wife's E4200. I can't get the LCD brightness to work correctly: I have to enable ALS (Ambient Light Sensor) to be able to adjust brightness. Do you have any issue with ALS and brightness adjustments? Installing Dell's DCP does not help.

On my E6400 with build 7048x64, the brightness works correctly.
