Ironically, I might now spring for one of the laptops on Dell's consumer line now then. So in the end, Dell might not lose a customer overall.

Good news, comrade! This works perfectly with the nvidia gpu that comes in the e6400. In Vista, all you have to do is go to View/Options/Output and then check "EVR CUSTOM PRESENTATION" When I play 1080p h264 mkv files without hardware accel, it uses about 50-60% cpu. With accel it goes down to like 15%. Also make sure you have the latest drivers installed because I didn't get hardware accel with the ones that came with my laptop.

this page has instructions for XP http://mpc-hc.sourceforge.net/DXVASupport.html

You also may want to run the newest unstable build of MPCHC. It's been very stable for me. build 1079 is what I use.. I think the 32 bit is the one you're supposed to use as the 64bit doesn't have as many codecs built in
    it's here:
    http://www.xvidvideo.ru/content/view/735/2/

The codec pack I use is http://cccp-project.net/
it installs a version of mpc-hc itself but it's older than build 1079 so you should make sure you're using the newer build after you install this

Thanks! Really appreciate the detailed answer. Got it working straight away. Mostly. MKV files play perfectly. I have some mp4 files encoded for my tivo that contain h264 video and ac3 audio and MPCHC does not recognize the audio at all, just video. Do I need a different splitter for ac3 in an mp4 file?

    Thanks again for your help.

So I got my replacement laptop. Guess what? Another CCFL screen. Dell FTL. If I didn't have my original laptop to compare it to, I woulda gotten screwed over.

Call them and say, that the laptop description says LCD NOT CFL, and you want a new display.

One easy way is to call tech support, tell them your service tag number, and ask them if it is CCFL or LED.
