I normally use a performance on demand power profile whether on mains or battery because it lets the CPU do a task quickly and then go back to sleep.

I think undervolting is worth using because of the reduced heat and fan noise when under load. I dropped the maximum voltage on my P8600 from 1.1375V to 1.05V and this means the CPU temperature never reaches the threshold to make the fan run fast (unfortunately, as discussed elsewhere, a chipset temperature of 50C will make the fan run fast).

I put my laptop in standby mode (XP pro) and then close it, battery fully charged. Why, the next morning, is it hot with the battery run almost the whole way down? How/why would it be coming out of standby mode? And what can I do about it? (Very frustrating!)

Did you make sure it was actually in standby when you closed it? The way these things go, the machine probably isn't coming out of standby (unless you've got like wake-on-lan enabled and someone's messing with you), but not going into standby in the first place, in which case it's probably a software fault.

I don't trust standby and don't normally use it.

    1. If my E6400 is in standby and reaches the time when it should hibernate then it wakes and sits waiting for me to type in my BIOS level password before it can hibernate. Dumb, but I've never got round to trying to debug it.

    2. All sorts of events and wake a sleeping computer. Go into computer management, event logs and look in the system log to see what happened after you put the computer to sleep. Is, for example, Windows Update waking at 3am to check for any new goodies?

At work, I accidentally plugged in an HP power supply into my e6400. The plug fits perfectly, but the amps and volts are different. Do you think it hurt my computer? It seems OK.

My dad did this to his old D600 before. It did fry after a little while, but after he unplugged and went home from work that day haha. So it probably can if the voltages are different than what's required.

Anybody use a tv tuner with their e6400? I have an express card slot and i am wondering what tv tuner (if any) would be compatible, portable, and easy to use

We bought 10 E6400's here at work, and one guy here found he had the same problem, turned out that his wireless card was waking up the system from standby. he found out the same way, he would put the system in standby and then put it in the carry bag to come to work and by the time he got to work the laptop was boiling in the carry bag :D

Just wondering if there is any way of pluging in a USB cable directly to the mobo? The reason I ask is that I have a usb device that I want to put in the spare space I have inside my case where the 3G WWAN card usually goes. Because we didnt order ours with these cards, the space is there, but is there an internal extra USB plug? Or does the mobo have the standard 8pin connector to plug in a USB cable into?

I was sure I read somewhere that someone else had done this in an E6400, but cant seem to find where I had read it.

I assume that this will most probably void the warranty, so I havent ripped the back off myself and gone for a hunt around, but just wondering if it was possible. No point in asking whether there will be warranty issues if there is no way to plug in an USB cable to plug the USB device into :D
