So I called up Dell. First was tech support. He was awed by my 99C GPU temps, and said there is something def wrong. I think he was offering to replace with equal or better, but I was asking about possibly downgrading and getting a small refund.

He transferred me to customer service, who then said no, I couldn't. I'd have to return it for refund then order a new one. Problem with this is I lose a 20% coupon and the free shipping when I ordered this, so I didn't want to.

I get retransferred to tech, and spent a while running a diagnostic and talking to him.Blah blah blah we talk, he says I should send it in to replace the motherboard and heatsink and it might take up to 21 days... which I don't want to wait. I asked if I could exchange, he said the system has had to have extensive support without it working for me to be able to exchange.

So i'm stuck here wondering what to do.

I was hoping to downgrade possibly so I could save some money and reduce the extras on the laptop that are detrimental or not worth it via dell. Examples: 250GB 7200RPM, 4GB RAM, Vista Business from Dell costs extra $$ through them. The backlit keyboard also uses about 1.5w, therefore reducing battery life by like 10% if it's always in use.

    edit:

    ----

merely watching youtube videos I hit 79C on the GPU, with the fan starting to spin loudly somewhere around 74C?

Temps are dropping. Currently 38C for both cores and 52C for my GPU.

so, what do you do to stop the wireless card from waking up the computer?

OK Well I just asked the guy and he said that all he did was uninstall the Intel ProSet drivers and used the default windows drivers and that seemed to do the trick.

I would also suggest you do what Chango99 suggests, and look in the BIOS for the Wake-On options and turn Wake-On-Wireless-LAN off.

How's everyone battery doing? My 9cell has already dropped 7.27%. From 86580mWh to 80286mWh. Sucks, under power saving at around 12w discharge, i'd last for less than 7 hours, less than I expected after such a short amount of time.

Amps doesn't matter. If the HP voltage was slightly lower then there's be no problem. If it is significantly higher then you might fry something.

I use a USB TV tuner when I'm at home. It need to be connected to the household antenna system in order to get a usable signal. What advantage would there be in using an ExpressCard tuner?

Also look in Device Manager. Various devices have a power management option where there may be a box to choose whether or not a device can wake a sleeping computer. (The box for my wireless card is greyed out). The Power Management options in the BIOS include an option for Wake on LAN/WLAN. Also USB Wake support.

I'd go with a USB TV tuner as well since TV tuners tend to run quite hot and having an expresscard tuner inside the notebook just doesn't sound so assuring. The only advantage i see with an expresscard tuner is the convenience (can be stored inside the notebook)

It makes sense that you allow them to exchange the mobo and heatsink. However, if you have the onsite NBD support, ask them to do that in your house/workplace. I already had the mobo/heatsink replaced, and it didn't work, and they are now following up on the problem.

Also, if they do offer a new laptop, you should try that as well, since some people have the Nvidia E6400 and report normal temperatures under load (below 80ºC). If replacing mobo/heatsink doesn't solve it, and the new computer also has overheating problems, THEN you can start asking for your money back. Insist a while, and then offer to accept a downgrade to the Intel GPU instead. Maybe that'll work.
