Similar to my system except I'm running Vista64... the Dell download is the Intel driver for the 5300 and includes Intel PROSet Wireless Statistics and Diagnostics apps plus a control panel interface to these tools and a profiles feature. These all seem good and solid and unintrusive... I never use them... just setup a wireless connection using Vista networking.

See my clean install notes if you decide to install Vista.

you need to update your post, from Vista SP1 to SP2.
It has a lot to offer including Bluetooth panel/manager.

And with Vista you don't need a A/V software, if you know what you download, and realize that a picture/video doesn't require admin privileges :)

My notes are up-to-date and accurate. They describe a Vista SP1 install updated to SP2, as prescribed by my SP1 Dell OEM DVD.

As for not using antivirus software, I'll give that some serious consideration right after Windows Update downloads its last critical security patch. :D

Is a 30 second total boot time from power off, (21 sec from vista) good for a e6400 with a SSD?

No SSD here just Seagate 7200. From Power ON, 10s to loading bars, 40s to desktop, 60s to settled task tray. No user login, no WLAN just LAN. Clean install.

Ah, SSD is a significant speed up over HD of course.
I need WLAN and LAN enabled but I don't use bluetooth, is it worth disabling this?

Yes, I have the same problem. Using all the latest DCP versions (except wireless manager, which I don't use).

It can be disabled in the BIOS. I suppose it would reduce some system overhead/power consumption... perhaps the rare radio interference... if you really want to scrimp and save... easily done. But you'll lose that cool Bluetooth icon. :)
