the issue with not running AV software is that not everyone is a 'power user'

Many people run things and don't realize it, or click on files on USB keys. One thing that you totally fail to look at is Windows vulnerabilities. It seems every 6 months to a year these are exploited and millions of Windows PC's are infected (Conficker anybody?)

Please, do not run your Windows PC without anti virus unless you're VERY aware of what you are doing.

Regarding your slowness issues, I would attempt to re-install the chipset and intel storage manager drivers and software. Good luck.

Well I suppose if you don't have experience, or don't know what a trusted website is, Dillo187 got a point. But based on post from Chris, it sounded someone more of a computer enthusiasts, let's say.

    Recap,
    - You know what your doing because you have years of experience, and you just download from trusted site (and you know what they are), you know what you connect on your system and exactly when you should/should not have a UAC prompt, and have a daily backup of your system: You can live without an actively running A/V.
    - Anything else, I highly recommend a A/V.

Now to return to Chris problem:

How about a different A/V software?
On my parents computer, they run a A/V software of course, as they don't know what they do on there system (there are the type that clicks on these ads that look like a dialog box). They have nod32 A/V. It's very light on the system, very very very good. And it has a free trial.
I can't find one article that doesn't suggest nod32 as a free A/V, and highly praised among professionals.

NOD32 is a very good AV software, I agree.

How did you get NOD32 free? There is only a free trial on their website.

Classic Chewbacca defense... swine flue, CDC, youtube, user error, restore points, daily backups, life perspective, watch TV, read CNN... "I highly recommend a A/V", nod32...

I'm glad we settled that! :D

    Hi all,
Been trying to use Task manager to see what is causing the slow downs, but it has not been much help, whatever app is in the foreground will show as the top cpu user when I get mouse slow downs or slow downs while dragging a window. I occasionally hear the fan go speed up a notch, then back down - all this in one second or two.

I guess I will start removing "stuff" and see if it helps. I will start with the Dell CP connection manager. What application can I use the control the Cell modem (Dell 5530) without the connection manager? I used to have a application on my desktop on the d620. Thanks, Chris

You can add a column to Task Manager's process list to show CPU Time. This doesn't dance around like the %CPU.

Is your web browser open when you get the slowdowns? Flash is very resource hungry. Unwanted animated adverts can waste power. I use Firefox with Flashblock (and Adblock plus) to minimise the this problem.

Also in the task manager you have a button called "how processes from all users" under the "process" tab at the bottom. Click on that.

This is what I suggest for TESTING purposes ONLY.
1- Uninstall you A/V JUST FOR NOW.
2- Uninstall ALL software that you installed.
Restart your computer, and see if your problem is fixed, else install back. We want to do this to know if it's a software that does this or your system or drivers.

Again, I am sue at 99% it's you Antivirus Program. If it is the case, contact the company for a patch.

just thought i would pop in to say that i am very happy with my e6400...since all these new people seem to have bad "problems" (and i consider myself picky).

Only thing i can thing of is that the new keyboard they sent me (i asked for a new one since my other backlit one was dim) has some flex that i feel like the other did not have. Doesn't bother me though. It seems like its higher up or something as well, since there are keyboard marks on the screen (and there werent on the old keyboard). However, this could also be (probably is) due to the fact that there is tons of dust on the screen, which accumulated and became noticeable eventually. :D also some annoying throttling issues, but it doesnt come up much and may be only when i use a certain app.
