My guess is that it is a Windows 7 issue. I was reading that Microsoft have changed the way this behaves.

I will only put a computer in a bag if it is hibernated and completely shut down. There are two many ways that a computer can be woken from suspend.

You may find some clues by looking in the System Event Log for the time when the computer was in the bag. Whatever woke the computer should be logged as an event.

It is not a Win7 issue. I always put my laptop in sleep. I very rarely I shut it down and never hibernate it; even when battery is critical I set it up to sleep rather than anything. I have no problem under Vista 64-bit nor Win7 64-bit.

I notice with windows 7 that after a view hours the notebook will get out of suspend mode and gets into hibernate mode. I have no problem with it but maybe you get an error in this process.
What you could do is change your power plan so that it doesnt hibernate. Default on my windows 7 installation is 360 minutes after going into sleep mode it will go to hibernate mode.

Another problem can be USB ports that wake up the computer.. like a mouse or something..

Check the event-log what ERRORS or WARNINGS happen after the computer gets out of sleep mode.

Make sure that the smart card service is set to disabled. If you stop it but don't disable it, it will automaticly start up again.

do you have a bios password set? if so, this is the cause. it is trying to hibernate, but the bios password blocks it, and it goes to 100% power and stays there, hung.

I think both of your posts might have nailed the issue.

Yes, my bios does prompt for fingerprint/password when booting, etc. This is a remnant from my previous installation of Vista - DCP/WaveEmbassy. Though I did not install them in Windows 7, I did not reset the bios password either.

I will reset/disable the bios password and confirm this. Thanks.

There is a set of options in the BIOS for the conditions when a password is required. I disabled the requirement for a password when leaving suspend.

Thanks John. I did notice that. But for starters I just disabled it altogether. The problem is I rarely turn off or put the PC to sleep. Will report back if the problem persists.

It's time to study the system event log to see what is causing the wake up.

    Does hibernate work properly?
