I just recently purchased an E6400 off the outlet store and read about the hard drive 'clicking' problem some people have been having with their drives.

I got a 160GB 7200rpm drive. Would changing this with a 250gb 5400rpm drive have any effect on noise in general, and maybe that clicking sound too?

Dell (and about all OEMs) just grabs whatever HDD of teh size and speed that you wanted. Most, but not all, Seagates are the ones that clicks (even the desktop version), and some Seagates (click or no click) makes a fan like noise.

Based on people reports on this forum, people get a random Seagate model featuring the specs you specified, or a Hitachi. Hitachi's is the best you can get form my knowledge. The ones that Dell put, so far, based on people who spook you, offer great performance (even for the 5400RPM) and are quiet.

Poeple with noisy or clicky HDD's simply find a patch (yes, there is) to fix the problem, or replaced the HDD with a Western Digital or better Seagate model

Anyway, wait and see what you have, as it's all random. :)

There's a firmware update for the the Seagate HDDs on the Dell website. It was released in February and I would expect that drives manufactured since then would include the updated firmware. Enter your service tag into the Dell support site to get a list of all the driver / software updates for your hardware configuration.

The HDD is fixed rigidly in the E6400 chassis which helps transmit any noise and the faster spin speed of 7200rpm does increase the noise. For something quiet consider the Hitachi 5K500.B.

Random question. I just installed the Windows 7 RTM on my E6400 and I'm trying to install flash player for IE...but everytime I go to the Adobe site in general, IE just locks up!? It sits there eating up 50% of my CPU usage. On FF it's fine, this only occurs in IE. It'll just sit there and freeze. What could be happening? This is a clean install.

Because Adobe wants to install Adobe download manager, to download the super small size Flash plug-in (the download manager is bigger than Flash... ok not true but useless never the less).

Solution is to download the plug-in for IE, as setup with Firefox.

    Hi guys,

I just installed Ubuntu alongside my Vista 64-bits. Unfortunately, as with all laptops I installed Ubuntu on, it doesn't work out-of-the-box.

In my case, my E6400, docked and used with an external 22'' monitor, can only display 640x480, 800x600 and 1280x720. I'd like to use 1680x1050 which is the maximum resolution. I've tried simple edits to the xconf file but no dice. Any help is appreciated!

Inside Ubuntu, accessible from the top menu bar (by default), these is a add/remove program. From there you can install Nvidia drivers and cross your finger that it takes out GPU.
Here are the Nvidia Linux 32-bit drivers:

I never tried them so don't know if it works.

Thanks for the link. How do I know if I'm running 32 or 64 bits?

Simple. Did you install Ubuntu 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64)?
That is your answer to your question :)
