Does the default XP driver also work better than the Dell audio driver?

    Thanks.

I don't believe so, no. I don't think it works at all.

:) I used a special student's offer to get it without Windows since my university gives me access to a free Windows Vista copy. I didn't save a huge sum of money but it wasn't negligeable either.

Thanks, Greg, I'll try that and report back.

I deleted the IDT driver and installed the Microsoft driver but the problems still exist. The sound crackles and breaks up almost all the time. This is really annoying!

Wow, you really got 5 hours of battery time with the Nvidia card. I don't even get 4 hours with the integrated graphics (with wireless running) at idle. I think my brightness was higher than the 40% but still. Maybe I should do a test again.

With regard to your audio problems; try and install the Intel Matrix application. It has worked for some people. I have an audio popping/cracking once in a while using winamp (worst on battery), but sometimes only. When its there it's doing it at least once a minute or so. In windows media player I haven't had the problem. In Itunes I had the problem as well. It is very odd, and as I said, only there some times (so for some reason a reboot might fix the problem  ). I deleted the IDT driver and I think the sound is of better quality now, but it didn't really solve my problem though.

I have noticed that my fans run more often when I run RMclock (undervolted) when in idle mode. Does anyone else have this issue? It seems as if the GPU temp for some reason doesn't fall as fast when the fan is running, running RMclock (and the fan seems to work mostly caused by GPU temp, starting when the GPU temp hits 46C and turning off when it hits 42C measured in I8KfanGUI. I have monitored this and it seems very consistent that this is what it does every time (isn't 46C a low kick in temp for a GPU?)

I got the same advice on another forum so I updated the Intel Matrix Storage manager and the chipset driver. Neither are the latest versions on Dell's own site. I then reinstalled the IDT driver and things seem to be better now but I've not tested the sound thoroughly.

I have installed the K-lite codec pack so that might be helping too.

As regards the battery, the time remaining I mentioned was just the reported time so I can't say if it's accurate but I do hope so!

Where did you find the updated drivers for Intel Matrix Storage manager and chipset driver?

I'm sorry for my ignorance, but what is K-lite codec pack? if it helps maybe I should consider that as well!?

Update: I reinstalled the IDT driver and so far so good but I've not tested it properly yet.

I'm not allowed to post URLs yet so add the "." where necessary.

    Intel Matrix Storage manager :
    downloadcenter intel com/Detail_Desc.aspx[/email]?agr=Y&ProductID=2101&DwnldID=16750&strOSs=164&OSFullName=Windows%20Vista*%2032&lang=eng

    Chipset driver :
    downloadmirror intel com/16023/a08/infinst_autol.exe

K-lite codec pack : You'll find all the necessary information here
    www free-codecs com/download/K_lite_codec_pack.htm

I don't like Quicktime so I installed Quicktime Alternative. Smaller and lighter on ressources. Available on the same site as the codecs.

Thanks a lot. I will definitely try that. I haven't reinstalled IDT and I am not sure that I will do so, as I think that the windows sound driver does at least as good a job. I will definitely try to update the drivers you linked to and hope that this will help.
