Updates: After a reinstall of the OS (Vista x64) the notebook freezing is still occurring. My co-worker (identical machine) reinstalled using XP 64 and had the same issue. He went back to XP 32-bit (at the expense of a lot of memory) and is still getting the same freezing. I'm thinking at this point we have a bad batch of laptops. (In spite of the hardware diagnostics showing everything is ok.)

The issue has been pushed back to Dell. I'll let you know how this works out.

I don't have the best pictures, but I do have a few side to side pictures. To be posted in the review.

My optical drive module weighs 147 grams / 5.2oz / 0.32lb, so that is the maximum weight saving. However, the weight saver bit of plastic must have some weight.

We are having the EXACT same issues with 3 x M4400s, 8gb ram and Vista 64. I wonder if there was a bad batch of ram or something out there...

I've gone through three levels of tech support at Dell and finally I just asked them to send me a replacement mobo since I've done everything I can think of under the sun for software troubleshooting with them. My biggest problem is the preboot authentication taking forever to come up to prompt for a fingerprint scan or password. If I leave it locked for at least an hour and come back to authenticate it will freeze up and I'll have to power off to get it back up and running. I do have a very touchy Tpad but it hasn't been freezing up. I do have 8GB of RAM and Vista x64 running on here. The fan still runs nonstop on dock.

the CTRL key is actually a touchpad problem, believe it or not. Update to the drivers listed on the e4x00 series (rev 213, i believe). To confirm that I am not crazy -- gently press the lower-left corner of the touchpad and try hitting a key like P -- it will likely force a print command. I was SO happy when I figured out that the latest rev fixes this, it was driving me totally batty.

You don't have a bad batch of laptops, I have the same exact problem with my M4400 (see the M4400 lockup thread). Let's discuss this issue there.

No, since the lockups occur on my G.Skill 4GB ram kit.

I've got the rev 213, and I also still have the problem with the trackpad causing the CTRL key function on my E6500. Are you sure the problem is really gone for you?

Anyone else still have this problem? It's certainly simple enough to replicate.

Will certainly try the rev 213, but it's random for me, sometimes I can replicate, sometimes not. But I did notice that once I use external mouse, which disables the touchpad/touchstick, the problem did go away.

I am absolutely certain. I tried a revert to the rev 210, and it came back. also, an install of any generic or synaptics driver killed the issue as well. I would try completely removing the 210 driver, and doing a clean install to 213. I have not experienced it once since I clean installed to 213. note: i am also using an e6500 -- and i had a system replacement done, and the driver fixed the problem on both machines.

is anyone else still experiencing this on 213?
