Latitude E6500 - fingerprint reader problems

Hello,

I got my Latitude E6500 a few days ago, I´m happy with it (except the lagging ALPS touchpad) but I have a problem with the fingerprint reader (Broadcom USH w/Swipe sensor).

The fingerprint reader is connected and does respond, but the ControlPoint software throws an error if I try to enroll my fingerprint (the error doesn't show up if I don't touch the sensor). If I reboot, the "Broadcom USH w/swipe sensor" is replaced by "Broadcom USH w/o swipe sensor" in the device manager. The swipe sensor is detected again after a complete shutdown. Huh?

I tried the fingerprint reader with the preinstalled Windows 7 (32 bit) - didn't work.
I installed a fresh Windows 7 (32 bit), installed all drivers and the latest ControlPoint Security Drivers and Manager - didn't work.
I installed Windows XP SP3, all drivers and ControlPoint - the same problem.

I can't give you the exact error message because Windows 7 and the ControlPoint software is german but I think it wouldn't help if i could, it's just saying that there was an error

Does anybody have a suggestion how to fix this problem?

There are various security related packages under the ControlPoint downloads.

Did you get all of:

(i) ControVault firmware

(ii) ControlVault utility

(iii) ControlPoint Security Device Driver

(iv) ControlPoint Security Manager.

Yes, I downloaded and used all security related packages (updated the Broadcom USH firmware too).
I read somewhere that you need the TPM chip enabled to use the fingerprint reader, tried that but it did nothing for me.

At this point I think I'm going to surrender after 3 days of battling with the device, it is more of a gimmick anyway (and crippled if you read this http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=413346).

It's a shame though, this notebook cost me 1.700€, at least the components should be tested and working.

I`m obsessed getting this thing to work and played around a day longer.
I found a little diagnostic tool (ushdiag.exe) for the Broadcom USH 5880 contained in the Dell ControlVault Firmware update package.
I created a bootable dos usb stick and did a few tests.

-dte = Initiate extended diagnostic test

Code:

ushdiag -u -dte 2
Individual test (FingerPrint) status: 0x0 (PASSED)

-fpt = Fingerprint Test

Code:

ushdiag -u -fpt
Fingerprint Test Successful.

-fpc = Fingerprint Calibrate

Code:

ushdiag -u -fpc
Fingerprint Calibrate Successful.

So far so good, now the interesting part:

-fdt = Fingerprint Diagnostics Test

Code:

ushdiag -u -fdt
There is no Upek Fingerprint sensor detected.
cvif_fp_diag_test() error status (0x7)

-fmt = Fingerprint Manufacturing Test

Code:

ushdiag -u -fmt
There is no Upek Fingerprint sensor detected.
cvif_fp_mfg_test() error status (0x7)

Well, I think there are 2 possible explanations for my problems.

1) The sensor is not fully connected to the USH
2) An incompatible fingerprint sensor (non Upek) is connected to the USH

Maybe someone can test a working fingerprint sensor and update this thread?

I resolved this problem, i had to upgrade firmware of CotrolVault chip (can download as Dell recommended). After restart, you start to install Security Pack, then installing Security Management. Enjoin and good luck to you.

When you say you got it working, do you mean with the Embassy Wave software that Dell provides? Or do you mean Windows natively recognizes it?

The problem before is that the Broadcom USH effectively hides the fingerprint reader from the system, thus severely restricting it's functionality unless the supplied software is used, which itself is pathetic.
