Anyone know what the cause could be, and how to get it working reliably?

Are you running the latest versions of (i) the IDT audio driver and (ii) the Dell ControlPoint System Manager? If not, install them.

I have exactely the same problem with my Latitude E4300. I did not find a solution yet. Installing of new drivers did not solve my problem. Could you already fix your problem?

I recently installed Windows 7, and under that OS, the mute button works reliably.
    Not sure why (better drivers?).
Under XP, the problem is still there.
