If the computer can see the HDD then it should be listed under disk drives in Device Manager.

My Computer > Manage > Disk Management. This is where you can do tasks such as add / delete / resize partitions and also assign a drive letter. It is possible that your computer is seeing the HDD but has not assigned a letter to the partition, in which case you cannot see the HDD in Explorer.

If you don't know what Disk Management is then no wonder you couldn't start your external. With SATA operation set to AHCI go to disk management and there you'll see the disk. Right-click the disk and choose "import foreign disk" or "activate" or something. Just don't choose the "convert to" action. After doing this one and sticking with your eSATA connection the disk will automatically load when you plug it in, regardless if the computer is already running or not.

The funny thing is that it doesn't appear in Device Manager . . .

That is strange. Did you try the manual "Scan for Hardware Changes". Nothing in Disk Management either, I presume.

Also, did you try both having the ESATA HDD plugged in when you boot up and plugging it in afterwards. The latter should cause a notification about a storage device being connected.

The other place to look, if you installed the Intel Matrix Storage software, is in the Matrix Storage Console. This is what I see when I have an eSATA HDD plugged in.

You're talking about device manager but that's not what we said.
Please follow the instructions and look in DISK MANAGEMENT.

Sorry buddy, where's disk management? I searched for it in start and googled it and went into programs as well. Sorry I'm ignorant when it comes to externals, but that's why I came here :D

Haha, my question above . .

I have tried all sorts of combos when it comes to boot up and plugging in and turning it on before and afterward.

I'll check out the Matrix Console . .

right click on 'computer' in the start menu, then manage. Disk Management is in there, or if in XP, right click on 'My Computer' on the desktop

    Like Dillio says.
This is where the disk will show and where you have to activate or import it.
Right click on the disk with exclamation mark and select reactivate or "import foreign disk"
    DO NOT select "convert to..."
