Are you sure? On the E6520 - which I have been using as a second machine - you can't even install updated Intel Drivers when Optimus is disabled. It won't find the hardware. All it sees is the Nvidia card. Even the way the system boots and posts is slightly different.

Seriously, its not just the OS that does not see the Intel Graphics when Optimus is disabled. The machine itself does not see it.

Sorry if I misudrstud: the M6600 Precision it's not supposed to be a "professional business" mobile workstation? If so why they (Dell, AW and the other manufacturers are following the 'cheapo 'trend?

Oh my! You're so right! It's like a transcription of what we (my scholar colleagues and me) were analizing and trend to decide yesterday... (Unless there are some 'surprises' in the hat...)

You have no idea of just how wrong this statement is. Talk to your Dell rep. Talk to your district manager. Make sure they hear you.

Also, don't assume that Dell wanted to discontinue the 1920x1200 screens.

Apple pretty much cornered the market on 10" ips displays for the iPad. They probably have the power to force a panel company to keep supplying them with 1920x1200 displays. Apple may also be able to discourage sales of 1920x1200 panels to other companies. When you buy 7.33 MILLION iPAD panels a QUARTER you have some sway over a panel manufacturer.

I bought the M6600 today. I hope I chose the right options. I got the 2820QM CPU, 8 GB RAM, AMD graphics card, throwaway hard drive to replace with RAID0 SSD (not sure if I will get Intel 510 or OCZ V3 MAXIO), 1900x1080 non-touch screen, web cam, E-port replicator (not the plus version). I also got a few extra AC adapters. I couldn't find the model number listed in the customize menu, so I ended up get some other model (210/240 W, but not "slim"?).

I am hoping that this laptop won't be much heavier than my D830.

As I might have understood correctly the AMD graphic card in the M4600 does not support something like Optimus...

What kind of battery life can be expexted from the machine?

Ahh, now it's even more difficult to choose. I was hoping to get a decent battery life with the firepro.

Do you have any info on when the M6600 will have the IPS screen option?

My understanding of Optimus is it always goes through the IGP for final display so it is not possible to shut off IGP to have Nvidia run all the time. Also with H55 chipsets with Optimus you can't swap in a Clarksfield i7 as they don't have IGP and won't display.

Don't ask me, but money is likely the reason. People who buy these mobile workstations are so little so they are willing to spend big bucks, so I can't understand the trend of 16:9 for business laptops in general. 16:9 should be left for crappy consumer grade laptops.
