What about with the FirePro 5950 which doesn't have Optimus?

Thanks. Is that like, casual use/web browsing, or doing absolutely nothing with the screen on standby?

havoctex, you keep making this machine seem more and more like the one I want.

One thing that strikes me as odd is that when i price the system through the higher education site (I will be getting this through my school's purchasing department), there are no "instant savings" which makes a well specced system go from 3k to around 4k which is above what my program will pay for. It seems counterintuitive that students/academic institutions pay more for the same system.

What about different scenarios (DVD playback, full load, office mode)? What about the FirePro equipped systems?

People keep mentioning that the Firepro m5950 card is essentially the same thing as the Radeon HD 6770M. But isn't the memory speeds clocked differently?

Firepro m5950 Memory Speed: 900 MHz
Radeon HD 6770M Memory Speed: 1600 MHz

    well according to notebookcheck anyway.

Does anyone know the performance impact in terms of gaming for this?

My Thinkpad T60p has served me exceptionally well for over four years now and it still has a lot of life in it. However, I am ready for an upgrade. I am considering a Thinkpad W520 or a Dell M6600. I tend to the M6600, but I am not totally convinced. I think both have similar specs and both are apparently very well built.

    pro W520:
Lenovo publishes excellent hardware maintenance manuals for Thinkpads. They include detailed instructions and they include a list of all parts that may be needed including part number. From a set of screws to the system board. It is then very easy to order any single part on the web and for a reasonable price. Dell has also hardware maintenance manuals, but I have not found a list of all parts with part numbers and I think it will be difficult to order specific replacement parts. Once I had to replace the keyboard and the system board because one of my cats peed on the T60p while it was turned on and in the docking station :-( I am not sure I could have done this with a Dell....

    pro W520:
Lenovo offers a "slice battery" which slides underneath the laptop and extends the battery life to some 20 hours.

    pro W520:
"thinkwiki.org" is an excellent web site with tons of information, tips and tricks for Linux users (I use almost exclusively Linux). I have not (yet?) found something similar for Dells.

    pro M6600:
I like the minimalistic design - I like especially the Covet edition.

    pro M6600:
The M6600 has two hard disk bays.

    pro M6600:
The screen is a bit bigger and - supposedly - the soon-to-arrive IPS screen is outstanding.

    pro M6600:
It offers the best mobile graphic cards available.

Going forward, I have three questions:

    1) When will the M6600 Covet be available? Presumably the M6600 Covet will use the 5010M graphic card, which will not be available before July (according to some German Web sites). Does that mean the M6600 Covet will arrive in July/August?

    2) The M6600 is available with Linux in "select regions". What are these regions? Where do I have to travel to get a M6600 with Ubuntu?

    3) What are the decision criteria for buying a M6600 for others?

    Regards,
    Werner

Most of the Adobe products are GPU accelerated. Premiere Pro, After Effect are taking advantage of CUDA. Photosop is also GPU accelerated on a limited number of things. The BBC just bought over 2,00 seats of PPro for their editing. There is an industry shift right now away from FCP, which is great. I think Audition, which is supposed to get rid of Soundbooth is going to be CUDA enabled also (don't do audio, so don't really care).

Anyone that does video editing should watch this:

Anyone that does video editing should watch this:

A lot of vfx studios are making GPU render farms and PhysX/CUDA is the reason. I think you should only go FirePro if you want to eek out a little more gaming. I plan on playing SWTOR when it comes out, and I think the Quadro 2000M will do the job.
