Well i was at school today using my E6400 at the school lounge. I had it on for about 2 hrs or so and all of a sudden there was a burning smell coming out of the motherboard and the computer just shut off on me. I was unable to turn it back on. So i called up Dell tech support. We went through some steps to try and recover the issue but was unsuccessful. So the tech decided to do a system Exchange due to the fact it could be a fire hazard. I should be receiving the new E6400 in about 5 days. Specs are identical or could be higher.

I upgraded my E6500 recently with the UK717... I'm not sure what the difference is, but you just need to pop out the old keyboard and slide in the new one.

Did or will Dell explain you the reason for what happened? It would be interesting to know, so if you get more news, let us know (fan, CPU, Nvidia GPU, short circuit...).

It was the carpeting with the static electricity when were taking apart drives and the guts of the machines, and something with the carpeting and the board caused that too happen, he said that never happened to him before.

    You mean, like this?
    http://www.ehow.com/how_5838302_discharge-static-hp-notebook.html
But I don't get how it can cause a burning two hours after the computer has been in use. I mean, if the problem was static electricity while the computer was been taken apart, I would imagine that an issue would appear not too much time after the machine has been turned on. And I would expect a BSOD or something like that, not a burning two hours after the machine has been turned on (or am I wrong?).

Oh, so you was using and THEN came the static electricity? That's bad luck...
Anyway, I don't want to keep changing the subject of your thread, sorry my curiosity...
