One reason to refresh before June would be to capture some of the college student market... every senior heading off to college next fall will be buying a notebook between May and August. Yeah, I know... there are other consumer builds available, but still...

Another reason is the pent up business demand caused first by Vista being universally rejected and then by the recession. But now 64-bit hardware and drivers are available, Windows 7 has been released, and IT replacement cycles are well behind schedule. The recession may wax and wane... may even take a hard down-turn going into 2011 when that funny money debt out there comes due for many banks... but sooner than later this IT demand bubble is going to start to burst and suppliers like Dell will want to be ready to capture it. This opportunity will cost but it will be worth it.

Every company is in a rush to refresh once new platforms are released. Be it the newest chip, mobo, or any technology, if they don't hurry to get the latest and the greatest, then they just lost the consumer to the next company who has the competitive advantage of the latest and greatest offerings.

Heh, refresh cycles have to do with internal budgets and not external trends

Arguably both, varies depending on industry, but I won't go there since it's getting off topic. Having said that, when has Dell or any company for that matter routinely skip a refresh when new platforms have been released by Intel? Take the Thinkpad for example, T41>T42>T43, virtually same chassis with updated "guts"(refreshed platforms/cpu's), arguably similar for the Latitude D620 to D630 refresh.

Calpella was just released, Intel will sooner or later announce the EOL for Montevina, and vendors rush to transition. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't be surprised if the "refreshed" Latitude E-series will look exactly the same aesthetically, however the internals must change, whether the name or chassis doesn't.

I know Dell doesn't give a crap about my company (self-employed), but if they don't have the M4500 out when the 8540w drops, they will lose out to HP or Lenovo. They might lose out anyway, but I was hoping to have 3 choices. :(

Similar to Dells transition of the Studio and Inspirons to the Calpella. Same chassis just new chips under hood. Hope it'll be the same with the E-Series. A nice E5400 with a i3-350M would be just right for me.
