    Hi,
    let me introduce myself,
I am Mark, long time Precision user, soon to become the proud owner of a Covet!
My uses are mainly Cad, parametric modeling large image maps, and whatever the boss throws at me.

    $4525.00

The shipping has been delayed, they do that just to heighten the experience, or maybe they are missing parts :)

I have one small issue I could use some help with.
I ordered the 1600MHz memory and want to end up with a total of 8MB
Due to issues beyond my control I had to order it with 4MB and will add another 4MB when I get it.

I have countless calls in to Dell and they have no information about any 1600MHz memory for the M6500
It is properly not listed in the database most support staff have access to.
Does anyone know what 1600MHz memory they are using?
I would like to match what it comes with as close as possible.
If I could get the information from Dell and the price was reasonable I would get it from them but so far no luck.

    Some alternate suppliers:
    Kingston KHX1600C7S3K2/4GX 4GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL7 SODIMM (Kit of 2) XMP
    Kingston KHX1600C9S3K2/4GX 4GB 1600MHz DDR3 Non-ECC CL9 SODIMM (Kit of 2) XMP

    BTW
I know the performance is debated (1600MHz VS 1333MHz) my main consideration would be stability.
It looks to me that the i7-920XM architecture should support 1600Mhz if correctly implemented.
    Any comments regarding stability welcome.

    Mark

Unfortunately there is nothing on the Dell side to cover this.
But I can tell you this, that I would wait until Dell is shipping add on modules.
Because I cannot find an equivalent to what Dell is installing now in the machine now. It is Kingston RAM but at 1600 it runs a CAS of 8-8-8 according to CPU-Z.

It looks like to me it is just 1333 modules that can overclock to 1600.
I could be wrong on that. But I would absolutely go with matched pairs for stability.

The Kingston ram you listed is the only thing out there. And it should be $280 for 8GB. You could buy it and benchmark the Dell Kingston RAM vs. the one you listed to find the better performer.

Yeah as long as the connector fits it will work just won't do much other than keep it powered on, your battery may also drain.

    I got
    • 2 OS disks - I ordered the XP downgrade so I got WinXP x64 and Win7 x64
    • 3 Dell disks - one is useful (Dell webcam software)
    • Roxio reinstall disk

Plus a very, very thin manual that looks like a printout of the skimpy PDF "SFITS_EN.pdf" that's been linked here (I think)...

    That's it.

I just picked mine up from the UPS Store where they delivered it.

I have not yet unboxed it. I'm going to wait for my nephew to get here so we can witness the unveiling together. I can't wait to start using this.

that's pretty skimpy for the m6500....even the m4400 uses a 135w adapter...I'd probably only use it with the machine turned off to charge the battery.

I'm not sure why, but the 2x4 gig DIMM pricing on M6400 and M6500 memory (for 2x4 [8] and 4x4 [16] gigs @ 1066 and 1333mhz speeds) just dropped by more than 50% today.

A 16 gig 1333mhz memory upgrade just went from costing around $2,700 (without discounts) to $1,151. I had originally ordered a 16 gig covet, but canceled it once I heard about the USB 3.0 upgrade. After reading dezoris' post about the matte RGB display vs the e2e on the covet, I'll be getting the non-covet version RGB matte display. Between the memory price drop and the move to the non-covet M6500, my system price just dropped by $2,000.

I guess it pays to wait :D

Maybe the people setting markup prices on ram have woken up to reality. Example: a Lenovo build from their page lists a similar pricing and has for awhile...

    4 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (1 DIMM) [add $240.00]
    8 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (2 DIMM) [add $540.00]
    16 GB PC3-10600 DDR3 SDRAM 1333MHz SODIMM Memory (4 DIMM) [add $1,270.00]

Definitely good news. Planning on ordering myself when the USB dust settles and my rep gets back to me. But there was no way I'd pay that for ram. Was trying to figure out the best 2GB config to get to sell them off and buy a couple of 3rd party 8GB kits.

    Good catch. Thanks.
