Well, an option you now have that you didn't before is trim.

Do you mean that I did not have TRIM with the Intel MAtrix Manager Software installed? I believe I did and still do. I am running Win 7x64 and it is set to AHCI in the bios.

    thanks.

Yes, trim does not work with intel's crapware installed. :D Also, if you are using an OCZ SSD, GC slows to a crawl. GC may be unaffected with other SSDs, but I haven't tested it.

Ok. with the intel matrix storage manager and without it, when running this command it gives me 0 depicting trim is enabled.

    fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify

Also, the results with Crystal Disk Marks are around the same from when I got the system 2 weeks ago and now.

Well, I do not need the IMSM and uninstalled it, so I guess if TRIM did not work (due to IMSM), it should now! :)

    Also, what is GC?

I still get 91% with Crystal Disk Info.

    thanks

To verify trim is working I deleted a >4GB file, as soon as it's deleted I can clearly see the drive cleaning itself (SSD led flashing rapidly). Then I downloaded and installed Intel's Rapid Storage Technology Drivers 9.5.4.1001 (beta), haven't tried it since it official release, but the drive did not clean itself after deleting a large file. I didn't use the trim command to verify if it was enabled, since I'm one of those "I need to see it to believe it" guys. :D

Here's a post by me&er that explains garbage collection (GC)

TRIM just notifies the Controller (via FS metadata along the Stack) that deleted data blocks (invalid) can be utilised by the drive's Wear Leveling algorithms.

Controller algorithms still have to collect this invalid data (Garbage), merge it, map it, count up block erases and re-assign valid data blocks accordingly.

GC is not only relevant, it is essential for ATA TRIM to be of any use at all.

A lot of blah surrounds the term Garbage Collection.. it is not actually a standalone FW function. It's an integral part of the overall Wear Leveling processes that can be made to function more or less aggressiveley within code.

As end users, making use of 'idle', 'logged-off' and powered 'Sleeps', allows us to control how and when Wear Leveling can be optimised.. this is very relevant if large scale TRIM (deletes) take place.

ATA TRIM in Win 7 works better with SSD when regular and small/med size data deletes take place.. and the more you pound away with large irregular data deletes, the wiser it is to allow some 'synch' time for overall Wear Leveling.

After doing some reading, I'm not sure if GC works with the Samsung SSDs, anyway here's some info that will help insure you have the latest firmware etc.

Hey guys, I'm curious to see how much ram W7 uses after a fresh boot, so I wondering if someone with at least 8GB of memory could post a screenshot of the task manager showing the performance tab. Thanks.

i agree with the statement that you shouldnt get a drive that is has a capacity that will be filled up quickly.
Now with trim it doesnt matter to much (at least it should) when the drive is full but i always still want a SSD drive to have at least 20% free so that it always have full pages free to write at..

But i have to say that you shoiuld use a SSD to really see the incredible boost it gives a system. I had a 2x160GB 7200 in raid setup. But when i changed that to a 160GB Intel SSD and a just a second 160GB HDD for large storage my system did get a performance boost i couldnt remember i got for years and years..

Its not the booting, booting is irrelevant when do you boot? once a week? maybe even longer? So thats not an issue at all.

But i am a java developer using eclipse and full rebuilds or compiles that took minutes (2 or 3) before now only take 30-40 seconds

Thanks, my samsung drive came with the newer firmware.

I also tried what is here is post 28 at:

    http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/f...o-I-know-if-TRIM-s-working-on-Windows-7/page2

It seems like the drive was working for a little bit after deleting at 4GB file.

    thanks for your input,

    Mike

No problem, glad I could help. Do you have the time to post a screenshot of your task manager showing the performance tab? Please see post 2067 for more details. Thanks.
