I too upgraded to 2009b, 64-bit. They have sped up some functions but there are limitations. I work with image data that is typically 4000 to 8000 by 400 (temporal x spatial), so I probably never see any multithread improvements, especially since the most frequent image manipulations are performed only in the spatial dimension. So what I really do is perform a set of operations on a series of 400x1 vectors... hmmm maybe I could do that more efficiently...

Cool, didn't know GPU-Z could do that. :)

Sadly on a 64bit OS I don't think there is much else that works, but I'm not a GPU expert by any means.

Yes, I had seen something else, but the link you gave is explicit. Reading that, it suggests my code should take advantage of multiple cores - but it seems not to. And so it suggests a question: is there timed Matlab test code anywhere that demonstrates multiple cores working, because I am deeply suspicious of seeing my big element-wise array manipulations running at EXACTLY 25% CPU load. Is there something wrong in my configuration of the laptop?

There is nothing wrong, matlab is just the problem.

Hyperthreading technology tricks the system to make it think it has 2 processors by core. That means matlab sees 8 processors but it's only optimized to use 2 processors at most so it will use 25% of i7.

As soon as the option to disable HT is available in bios, you will be able to use 50% of your i7. That's better than nothing... I know it's very frustrating but you should take a look to this topic.

Anyone think that the Boxx or Sager Mobile workstations are just as good if not better than the Dell m6500? I know there is a huger price diff. with Boxx, but Sager seems to be right about the same.

    Any thoughts?

Reason I won't go with Sager is because of onsite warranty issues because I work on it....I like them though, almost pulled the trigger on one of them many times over the last 3 years.

Boxx? Never heard of it.... :D
