The picture in the V13 service manual shows a standard 2.5" SATA HDD. The majority of SSDs use the same form factor and connector.

Any of you guys try to switch to Windows 7 64bit?
I bought the basic model (Celeron 743) + Ubuntu, but I' trying Windows 7 64-bit, Everything seems to be working fine, except that my touchpad doesn't have multi touch capability or even the scroll function on the side....I am thinking that it didn't have any of those capabilities with Ubuntu neither (not sure though).
Now, I'm not really sure if the processor can really handle 64-bit instructions (intel web site silent about it) or even if the mother board or the bios can do it. Any comments?

I have mine running Win7 64bits no problem - 4GB memory with it is perfect; have the Intel 7300 C2Duo.

Did you install Dell's touchpad driver? If it is the Alps touchpad that Dell users in the E series Latitudes then get the latest W7-64 Alps driver from the E6400 downloads.

Is there a way to know what touch map I have in my laptop? I tried both, the synaptics and the Alps. In both cases the device manager said the device was working properly. (So I guess it isn't a hardware failure). I wondering if it has to do with the 64bit Windows?

How do you not put HDMI on the V13/Latitude 13? Makes no sense in this day and age. Makes me happy I just picked up the e-port for my E4200. I'd be more inclined to get an e4200/e4300 from the outlet or even check out the ASUS UL30A line. Add a webcam but no HDMI? Odd priorities for a business laptop IMHO especially when there is no replicator option like there is for the E series.

Because there are virtually no circumstances under which a business user would use HDMI. Most projectors use VGA (and id bet they all have it as an option at least) so if you are only putting one port on VGA is the way to go. Webcam was added to allow for collaboration/video conferencing.

You are thinking like a consumer because you probably ARE a consumer (I am as well), but we need to remember we are NOT the target market for this laptop. And in any case I admit HDMI would be nice but id probably never use it. This machine is far too weak ot be a primary machine so id never hook it up to an external monitor, and id have doubts about its ability to drive an HDTV very well.

When's the last time you gave a presentation? 2001? Come out of the dark ages my friend. I've been in five different restaurants this year alone that all have LCD panels in their private rooms instead of projectors and screens. Many videoconferencing setups have flat screens and more corporate conference rooms seem to be migrating to flat screens as well. They've become a commodity. You can get a 52" LCD for close to a grand or sometimes just under, and I'm actually installing one now in our office instead of going the pj & screen setup. Most monitors now have hdmi for use at home or if I'm presenting to a small group at a table and just bringing a spare lcd with me. Besides video, what's the other big benefit of HDMI? Audio. One cable for both. Instead of dealing with a crappy speaker on a pj, you've got audio going right to the display's speakers and through one cable.

Also more hotel rooms are getting flat screens and ditching tubes. So if I want to watch video from my computer while traveling I can easily hook up and go. If I use vga I still have to bring a headphone to rca cable for sound. It's about convenience, especially if you're one laptop is pulling double duty for work and play. Just having vga is a mistake in my book for the modern business person.

And how is this machine weak with an SU7300 processor and 4500MHD graphics? Pretty much the same combination in the Acer Timeline, MSI X340 and Asus UL30 models that are running in the same circle as the Latitude 13/V13 models. Unless you're one of those people buying the $450 linux model, these machines are quite capable and only crippled by the fact they are sitting on the business side of Dell's site instead of the home. This machine can easily go toe to toe with the models I mentioned above. If you're looking to game you're not even looking at this laptop so the weak comment is just weak.

And fyi on the 4500MHD integrated graphics card, since your knowledge seems to be lacking....

sorry for the off topic post, but i was considering buying this laptop, and i'm a little confused between these:

    dell vostro v13
    lenovo thinkpad x100e
    msi x340

any suggestions on which one to buy would really be grateful. looking for best battery life possible, durability, and video playback performance.

i've also started a thread here, so if its not appropriate to discuss this here, then u can use this link:

    Hi everyone,
i'm about to order a V13, SU7300 with 4GB RAM. There is an offer of such spec, but comes with Ubuntu. I intend to install Window s7 64bit on it, may i know how to do this without a built in cdrom? Can i boot of a USB cdrom? if yes, which models are supported?

Many thanks for your kind advices.

    regards,
