No, you can't order it with the black lid. Only one person succeeded in tricking a tech rep into sending someone by to replace the lid 'cause the rep had no idea. It does seem to be possible to fit it on later but that does depend on which screen you have. The 2CCFL screen for instance is a bit thicker then the WLED screen. That is actually the only reason the screen lid is even mentioned in the config screen, the black finish refers to the finish of the laptop itself. I would just order if i were you ;)

I backup my work file every day even using a non raid setup,so nothing would change for me except for the better Raid 0 performance.

I almost never use my internal optical drive anyway, and prefer to use a sony drx external which is A LOT faster and more reliable with different media.:)

got my screen replaced today. The tech was very efficient and organised, and was very careful.

apparently for dell UK if you give the onsite tech a rating of less than 7, he gets a call from dell to get an explanation!!

they dint have stock of mobo's, so thats gonna get replaced on tuesday...

For people who have had BSODs:

    - Did you get them during (or right after) gaming?
    - Was your hard drive ever corrupted, with Windows fixing it at next boot?

I ask because I recently started playing Flight Simulator on my m4400. When I play games, I boot Vista off of an external SATA drive. Since I've started gaming, there have been two occasions where the internal drive got corrupted (the first was relatively minor; the second time, there was a lot to fix on the disk, though Vista could fix it). The second time it happened, Windows was BSOD'ing on start-up. The internal drive is the stock drive that came with the Dell.

I'm wondering if the corruption could be due to heat issues associated with game playing. (I would be very surprised if it was a bad hard drive, though I wouldn't totally rule it out.) I'm running A09, and the GPU never climbs above the low 70s, though I haven't been monitoring hard disk temps until now.

    mmm rippleback.....

my precision seems to turn more heads than macbooks. the two things that make it happen are 1) the rippleback and 2) the keyboard when it lights up.... my friends think it looks pretty hardcore lol.

I've spoken to Dell and after hours and many trials and errors he found a way to install both XP and Vista with Sata set as AHCI from before installing the both OSs (fresh install for both). If anyone needs, let me know.
