My notebook's graphics card gets very hot while playing games. It reachs beyond 90 degrees easily. Then the core clock slows down to reduce temperature but games run choppy . I called Dell support and a representative asked me to send them a snapshot of a program that monitors temperatures. Her supervisor answered that temperatures were fine and it was normal that during gameplay the graphics card gets so hot. It was more of a "performance" question according to him. Let me say that prior to this the motherboard was replaced because the optical drive didn't work (don't ask me why they did replace the mobo too) and I didn't have this problem back then.
    My configuration is.
    Core i5 520
    4 Gb RAM
    320 GB
    Quadro FX1800

the GPU is a bit high for idle. DId you edit the HWmonitor .ini file? you need to change the TJmax temp to get accurate temps for arrndale

dont let them give you that "performance" BS. The precision series are supposed to be their mobile workstation series for heavy duty rendering and other intensive tasks. it is not acceptable for it to be throttling under max load.

    Way too hot!

I use Afterburner to overclock the Quadro FX1800 from 560 MHz to 650 MHz (GPU clock, all other clocks overclocked by about 20%, too) and I don't nearly reach these temperatures playing games in Windows 7.

    My experience:

    Windows 7, 3D game with 100% GPU load, overclocked: 70° to 78°C

    Ubuntu 10.04 (Gnome/Compiz High Effects Desktop, 2 screens, little 3D activity): 50° to 58°C

Something is fishy with your GPU or, more likely, the cooling system of your notebook. I would insist on Dell servicing the unit. Most likely, they did not (re-)install the cooling system correctly during the first service call. And as to the answer you got during the first service call: forget the guy, keep calling them until you get somebody better informed and more helpful.

Alternative: fry your motherboard by running MSI kombustor all the time (believe me, at 90° to 100°C GPU temp, this will happen sooner rather than later) and get another new mobo... (OK, I am not serious about this alternative) :D
