I know SDXC cards are identical in hardware and from what I can gather the only difference is in the default filesystem(exFat instead of FAT or NTFS). If this is the case, I should be able to plug it into my existing SDHC slot on my M4500 and read cards so long as my OS can read the filesystem correct?

Or am I mistaken in my understanding of SDXC cards? Thanks for the help guys! Just dont wanna buy a SDXC card to find out it doesnt work with my laptop.

SDXC is not compatible with SDHC or SD. The card has the same form factor but that's it. It's the same story like it was with SD and SDHC.
The M6500 uses a card reader by Texas Instruments which is not SDXC-compatible afaik and I guess Dell used the same for the M4500.
