    Hi Barn,

I am really interested in this!
There are huge discussions concerning colour reproduction with RGBLEDs and based to what I have read it is not a problem of the screen but of Vista not supporting wide gamut screens. There was also the rumor that WIn 7 can support this kind of screens and that colours are fine in WIn 7.

    Can you confirm it??

    to be honest,
the previous builds to 7048 i have tried all had similar color reproduction to vista ie the overloaded red's and greens.

i'm no graphics professional or anything so i'm basing my observations purely on browsing photo's and the colors in the interface it's self etc

The color in this build seems well balanced and also the text in the dialog boxes/menus seems much more clear somehow.

I don't feel the need to alter anything in the Nvidia control panel, which in itself must be a good thing surly :)

After a really horrible experience talking to Dell 'reps' I was disgusted and I'll leave it at that because the whole story would require too much space and probably a good lawyer. I was intent on buying anything but a Dell though Dell's the only brand I've owned and thought maybe the Lenovo w700 might be better for me. But both were too expensive so I took advice from Sis who has made her living on computers and always bought 'refurbished' and talked me into it. So I ended up getting a Covet with the QX quad core (not my first choice but OK), two 320GB, 7200rpm disks and 4 gigs of RAM in two slots. When it arrived I was amazed that this was either brand new or close to it because there was not a single sign it had ever been used. And including NJ sales tax the whole thing came to $2460. The same machine put together on the order page came to something like six grand so I was willing to suffer the many problems people seem to be having with the 6400. My problem is that so far everything works perfect. I feel sort of left out and am looking for problems and finally found one. The BIOS is A01 and Dells download page says it's urgent I install A03. Two questions. Should you upgrade BIOS is you have no problems, what is different about the two, and can I revert back if the new BIOS sucks? I'm going to have lots more questions but getting these answered seems like a good place to start. When I first fired it up I was looking for this great RGB screen but while it seemed very nice it didn't seem much if any different than a good UXGA screen without the 500 dollar super screen. Then I discovered the ambient light thing and realized it was running at about half brightness. When I cranked it up it was a real wow moment. With lots of white on a page full brightness is almost too bright. But it is worth every penny to me now that I can sit two good quality screens side by side and see the difference. I need sunglasses sometimes. But about that BIOS thing, any advice?

gulfstreamtec, you got a totally pimped out laptop for under $2500, no other company can match that, not even close. Keep that in mind before bashing dell.

I wasn't bashing Dell and didn't mean it to come out that way, but the 'reps' a lot of other posters suggest I try calling told me they'd meet either Lenovo or HPs price on the w700 and whatever the HP model workstations that are pretty much the same specs as the 6400 if I'd send them the quotes. Lenovo had a 20% + 10% deal going and HP had a 20% discount too. They stalled me with chicken@hit stuff like "they don't include complete care" when in fact both order forms did and on and on, me the loyal Dell man wanting the Dell. Well after they'd stalled me till the other coupons ran out they told me to FO with their original $500 off offer on a $5900 machine. I wrote Michael Dell a friggin letter and actually received a response not from him but at least someone high enough to make things right and assure me that the three different jerkoffs I had dealt with had been shot, and that soothed the savage beast. Because I was very pissed and with good reason. But they seem to have a special team to come to sooth seriously pissed long term clients and I appreciated that. But sitting here with what is a fantastic deal indeed most of that is forgotten and all is forgiven between me and Dell. That price included a 20% discount they tacked on but even if they hadn't it'd still be the best deal I've ever made. I really think the thing is new. I've been defending Dell for years because every single thing I've bought from them has been great, as has been the service. Maybe I'm the exception but that's been my experience. This seems like another good one, my CD drive makes no noise, I've tested about everything and it all works, the esata hookup is great and all the other small and large problems I've been reading about are absent so far. One of my favorite programs, 18kfanGUI even works fine, though I recommended it to a 6400 owner who said it didn't work on his. It won't read all 4 core temps but everything else works even though the program hasn't been updated since the M90. And for the thread about where they make the best 6400s, this one was put together in Malasia, same as the last two Precisions I've bought. But what do you know about the BIOS thing?
