I think this might have been posted before, but I can't find it. Is there an easy way to tell which lcd I have in my M6400. I mean the manufacturer part number. Thanks.

It seems works but Flat panel scaling is locked to display built in scaling and that's wrong:
try to watch a video in a player that isn't windows media player, you'll see huge pixels.. or try to use a videoediting softw such a s PremierePro..
howeever I've ugraded to win7 build 7201, I'll make another try

Please ignore my previous request. Found the answer in another thread.

I do have another question. When your M6400 is docked, does the laptop's eSATA port work? On mine, I have to connect my eSATA drive to the docking stations's eSATA port. If I connect it to the laptop directly, nothing happens.

Try going to disk management. start>right-click "computer">manage>disk management....there you'll probably see a dynamic disc with a yellow exclamation mark....right-click this and choose "import foreign disk"

I have to do this everytime i plug in the external with Windows already running but if i plug it in before booting it automatically loads the disk

18-bit as in the LCD screen. Most Laptop screens are 18-bit and use dithering to achieve a fake 24-bit. Why this is done, I can not say. They are not true 24-bit screens. In fact it's no uncommon in many desktop LCD's either although I think most newer units are real 24-bit screens.

That's what makes the Covet such a pleasure. A 30-bit LCD screen in a laptop is really quite a rarity, let alone a 24-bit screen.

Ah ok...that's why i was confused, the lcd panels themselves are actually 6-bit or 8-bit, RGB LED being 8-bit then. The colour depth is referred to as being 8bit (256colours) 16bit (65,536), 24bit(16,7million) or 32bit (Truecolor)

But you're right, manufacturers should at least give the option for a nice S-IPS screen in a laptop but i think the people actually wanting to pay for that in a laptop are not enough to justify the production costs, sadly.....í'd get one :D

    edit: omg..seems i'm in a nit-picking mood today, don't mind me ;)

Sorry to get off the subject but I do think my edge to edge display is the best thing since sliced bread and I didn't quite catch what you said. The edge to edge LED is 8bit 30bit or 24? In the display settings I only have the choice of 16 or 32 bit, unless I'm reading the wrong numbers and I don't think I am. It wouldn't make any difference but I would like to know. And when production started all the LEDs were from LG, or has the Samsung LED been mixed into production from the start? And is there any consensus on any big quality difference between the two? Mine's LG and so far I don't see how anthing could be any better. And is it actully glass covering the edge to edge? I'd like to use Windex to clean it but am nervous it may be some type of plastic that'll melt with anything but water.

And also, if I install Win 7 on a partition of my recogonized e-sata external drive what would happen if I just turned on the computer but left the e-sata drive turned off? And is there any way to keep a second OS on the second internal drive from default taking first place in the boot? 7 is a big improvement over Vista but anything could claim that. And having it take over and boot automaticaly if I'm not right there to choose XP is one of my complaints. I usually like to hit the power button and go get coffee or whatever and come back when everything is up and running. That's the main reason I uninstalled Vista, it wasn't good but less horrible than I expected. Turning a 2.5gig (XP) system into a 14.5gig (VISTA) then turning it into a 7.5gig (7) is a step in the right direction but in spite of the fact that I'm only a halfwit with this stuff but I am an engineer and the 'improvements', if you'd care to call them that just doesn't balance out at all with their giant sizes and appetites. Could any of you expert level folks out there go in and strip out all the useless junk from Win 7? Or even XP for that matter. And I mean most everything from the lame games, Outlook Express, the lame defragger and most other 'tools' that include the Media Player and all the other useless stuff that sort of bothers someone (me) that just want an OS that will run my programs. All of the above mentioned things I use other, better software for because Microsoft, in my experience does a lousy job of all that. Giant Antispy was a good program back in the day and Microsoft bought it and proceeded to turn it into crap. Just one example that comes to mnd. And while thoroughly off subject is something I ask everybody lately. Less is more in my experiences with most everything and going from six times larger to only three times larger doesn't impress me at all.

The panel is 8-bit per colour which gives you a 24-bit colour space.

As for Win7 and XP and running 2 OS'es...why not just install two if you want to dual boot and just set one as the main OS so it'll boot into that when you don't choose anything? EasyBCD gives you controls like how many seconds POST will wait for you to choose an OS and stuff like that. I don't know if the Master Boot Record can deal with an OS not being there at all half of the time....anyone?
