Hi all. I have an M65 that died a couple of months ago. Have replaced it with an Asus G73JW, more suited to gaming...

However, would love to get the M65 going again, and use as a spare machine etc. The problem is that as soon as I plug a PSU into it and try to start it, the PSU trips out (shown by blue ring going off on cable). Have tried multiple PSU. Have stripped the machine completely (I do this kind of stuff for work) and cannot find any obvious shorts etc.

Is this a known issue? Likely to be MOBO, or possibly power connector? I see a lot of replacement power connectors on eBay, which makes me wonder about the connector.

    Any input greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

No it's most likely some power circuitry on the mobo that's dead. You will almost certainly have to replace it unless you can figure exactly which component(s) is acting up and can replace it.

Thanks for the reply Commander. It's what I thought, but hadn't hoped for. As it's the 512mb discrete graphics version, the mobo's don't show up on ebay at all by the looks of it. $450AUD from Dell, erk

You can use motherboards from the D820 if you don't really care for the GPU. In fact, I'd even say go for a D820 board with integrated graphics, just to avoid any future issue with the Nvidia GPU.

ok, cool, I was wondering about that. I assume that I'd need a mobo, and a different heatsink. How's W7 OEM going to react to a new mobo? Just need phone activation?

Thanks a lot for the assistance.

You might need to reactivate... but otherwise it should be okay. W7 should have all of the drivers needed for the D820 boards just by default.
