I was playing stalker a few days ago getting 50-70 FPS and now come today its so much lower at 20-30(not playable) and I tried CS:S, and COD4, and they all seen dramatic fall in FPS. I don't notice any artifacts but I just notice huge FPS hits. I also think my fan isn't running anymore but I am not sure. Does anyone one know what I should do now? Its out of warranty already.

Check temperatures using HWMonitor. Also try put your ear to the computer and see if you can hear the fan.

Also which Vostro do you have?

edit: assuming that you have the 1700 there is a fan here and many other places on the net.

It could be that your fan died, and your GPU is overheating and underclocking to prevent damage. Definitely check temperatures with HWMonitor and report back.

well i actually have softwares that shows cpu/gpu temp, my normal gpu is 47-50C, CPU Core 43-44C these seem really normal temps (not playing games just normal desktop surfing), and I even tried GPU stress test and thats the only program I notice artifacts at 70+ GPU temp, but I remember seeing artifact with my desktop before also so I'm not too surprised, its just in-game i don't see any artifacts just a significant decrease in FPS in all 3D games. I didn't do any registery or downloads that would of mess with it, nor do I have virus/spyware i scanned already. I notice my CPU is also kind of sluggish ?! wth

I'm guessing your fan died. You'll need to look on Google or eBay for a replacement fan.

Possibly your drivers glitched and is throttling the GPU back for some reason. Did you try reinstalling your drivers or installing other drivers?

Try download i8kfangui and put your fan on full speed; see if you can hear it.

I actually have that too, is it suppose to show for Vostro 1500? Well because the funny thing is, Fan 1 and 2 = 0 RPM. The thing is my CPU speed is still factory.

You guys don't think me reformatting would help would it? I'm guessing no...

Even when ''forced to full speed? Can you hear anything from the fan?

It should work, the last poster in this thread wrote it does.

yeh it doesn't, and now to look on the bottom of laptop, the fan isn't moving at all through the little air slit that allow air to escape, no fan movement at all.
