Already done before I typed my post above. :)
I just hope Microsoft still check out "send feedback" in Windows 7 RC1.

why do people keep asking this? It is imperative to install the IMSM driver. Period. check the intel change log if you don't believe me.

OK, after several of your posts basically stating "if you don't trust me, then read the changelog/release notes", I'll bite.
I haven't noticed the S3/S4 issue with several brands of SSDs, nor have I experienced any latency issues with the default drivers installed under Windows 7 x64.
I see nothing "imperative" in the release notes below as pertaining to Win 7.
If you've experienced anything specific with Win 7 & it's default 8.6 drivers, do make them public, rather than broadcasting cryptic messages of doom.

I got sick of stating exactly what the fixes were after doing it 2-3 times on the e6400 owner's lounge forum. it solves issues specific to system hang, as well as errors and hangs related to esata drives. and of COURSE it doesnt say anything specific to windows 7, intel does not officially support it yet, so it doesnt get mentioned in the changelog. any fix noted for vista is a fix for win7.

and i have had BAD hang issues related to the 8.6 drivers, they have major issues. I am not sure if some of these are still as bad on the RC 7100 release, but they were catastrophic on win7 7000. the latest drivers are a VAST and necessary improvement over the default ones, and are worth installing. not all fixes get shown on changelog either, but i dont think you have the right changelog up, or noted all of the changes. there were specific notes to the esata hang and general system instability problem fixes.

Well I sure do understand the part of applicable to Vista = (generally) applicable to Win 7.
I think the fixes are targeted towards specific issues, rather than being "imperative".
But hey - I ain't one to neccessarily pick at keywords - especially with the weekend in full swing.
I hear ya about the repetitive info; have one on me :D

I don't doubt you, veritas72, but I've been running the RC for two weeks now without installing the IMSM (nor much else extra) and I've had no perceived drive or latency issues. If I experience such, I'll be sure to install it--but for now, the RC by itself seems to be rock solid on my E6400.

fair point. i said it was imperative, because doing early testing on win7, the system would get inoperable without the updated imsm drivers -- it took me a long time to pin down the cause, but that was it :) it is entirely possible that something has changed in win7 that makes it less imperative, as i havent used build 7000 in some time :) (it is also possible that it was specific to a particular drive (either hdd or dvd)). either way, who knows. enjoy the weekend :) one more week of finals for me, then summer.

Ok, so i'm wondering what I should install for drivers etc. I'm clueless here.

I installed windows 7 on my old partition OS (C: ).

I installed the IMSM driver/application on vista and again on windows 7. I installed dell control point, well some of it.

I don't know what else to do or what i'm missing? I mean, i let windows 7 install by itself, and everything is functioning so what do I do? By everything, i mean the basic things that I do. Like the touchpad works, keyboard works, etc.

What am i suppose to install here for drivers or such?

You have the IDT sound card driver to install and touchpad which are important.

On the E6400 - absolutely nothing.
Install the Win 7 RC, install the Control Point Security drivers, and that's it.
No need for IMSM, chipset, audio, WLAN or anything else.
Everything else works well, and a few minutes of Windows Update gets everything detected, installed & working dandy.
