Windows 7 on Latitude E6400

Well, no additional codecs, would be the better term.
As simply Windows 7 has already a bunch of excellent 32 and 64-bit codecs. To say the truth I am truly surprised by it. Microsoft really did an superb job on them.

I'm glad I can finally install Windows and watch a DVD without having to go fetch a missing piece!

Now, can I burn a DVD without having to go fetch a missing piece? Or is that why Dell still ships Roxio?

I had to clear this up, because I know someone will come in the discussion and read the last bit of thread, and then miss understand.

AH YES! I LOVE IT TOO!

You can burn data on CD's and DVD's, but not movies which can be played on any DVD players. It can also burn prepared ISO's (but not any other disk image format). In any case, ImgBurn (free, works great, easy to use), fills up the missing part (except DVD movie.. but then you use Windows DVD Movie Maker to convert video's into DVD movies.. not fast, not the best tool around, but it's free, ideal for the rare usage one might need.)

 

Which chipset driver is recommended on the E6400?

2 options on the dell website:

Intel Chipset - AMT SOL
Intel Chipset - AMT HECI

(win7 32bit)

I believe you must install both of these if using AMT. I skipped them. See my E6400 Win7 reimage notes below.

I am not using AMT but obviously it needs a chipset driver installing.
These are the only those 2 available on dells website for the e6400.

I've recently upgraded my work E6400 to Windows 7 pro x64. It was a fresh install, as I was upgrading from XP 32 bit. I've got drivers installed for everything (nVidia for the graphics, not the Dell ones) and it seemed to be working pretty well until I put it in the dock. I'm not 100% certain, but it seems like in the dock the system is unstable, and hard locks about once a day. Anyone seen behavior like this and know how to resolve it?

I drive dual monitors as well, if that matters.

If you don't have a AMT of vPro enabled boards, you don't need it. It will even fail to install if you try. If you use Windows 7, you don't really need your motherboard drivers (actually-they are in Windows update as soon as you connect for the first time on the web, and built-in the OS). But if it makes you sleep at night, you can go on Intel web site and download the latest version from there. The driver will depend on if you have the Intel GPU or not.

 

Since Dell does not list a chipset driver for the E6400 Win7 x86, then it is provided by the OS install... and you can choose to update same afterward using the latest chipset driver download from Intel (Intel Mobile GM45 Express Chipset?).

Since you are not using AMT, do not install the two Dell Intel AMT drivers. I would also skip installing the Dell DCP Security Manager (drivers), and simply right-click disable the USH Broadcom device in Device Manager.

But do install the Ricoh chipset driver.

And install the Dell System software download first.
