I have a less than a week old Latitude E6510.

I had four freezes while watching flash videos. I thought the adobe software was bad, so did uninstall and fresh install.

Now I've experienced a couple of more random freezes:
    1. system was idle
    2. surfing the web on google chrome

I have windows 7 Ultimate x64 and it seems like many people out there with vista and windows 7 are experiencing the same problem. I personally used both and on my other machine with win7 Ultimate x64, haven't had any random freeze at all.

I also have 1333mhz ram, and I know my system only supports 1066. Then I found this thread:
    Random Lockups, Intel Chipset

Diagnostics and Dell are telling me there's no problem with hardwares. So I'd like to give a shot at dropping the memory speed. How should I do this?

Anyone having random system lockups with windows 7 x64?

    I do.
I had one of the first M4400 on the market and it was a mistake - it was a brand new generation coinciding with the start of the E series.

I thought everything would be solved by now.

Anyway over the months they basically changed everything (docking station, graphic card, motherboard) and now it is much better but I still have a freeze now and then.

Also sometime the USB ports will stop working. As I am working with an external keyboard / mouse this means I can't access the computer anymore. Sometime unplugging and replugging them works, sometime it doesn't and I have to open the lid of the notebook and type on the notebook's keyboard.

What I find funny is that basically the M4400 was an overpriced E6400 and we had little problems with our E6400 notebooks.

NB: The freeze were already there with Vista x64, as a matter of facts there are much less on W7 x64.

Are you using the factory OS installation? Have you tried reinstalling the OS? Do you get freezing issues on a clean install?

YES! It is getting on my last nerve too.

I ordered the system loaded with 8 gigs. Top of the line everything Samsung SSD 256.

I was having quick freezes and it came back after pausing a few seconds.

So, I reinstalled the OEM disc that came with it to see if that would fix it. Now it just freezes hard.

    Still having issues.

Trying to figure it out. But, a hard freeze is hard to fix! No bluescreen or anything. Just a screen that nothing moves on anymore.

Here is my laptop specs (Can you compare and see if you might have a part in common?):

    Intel Core i7-720M Quad Core 1.60GHz 6MB for M6510
    8.0GB, DDR3-1333 SDRAM, 2 DIMM for Latitude
Internal Backlit English Keyboard, Dell Latitude E
512MB NVIDIA NVS 3100M for Quad Core for Latitude E6510
256GB Dell Mobility Solid State Hard Drive, 2.5MM, Dell Latitude
Internal Swipe Fingerprint Reader and Contactless Smartcard Reader for Latitude E6510
    15.6" Full HD (1920 x 1080) Wide View Anti-Glare LED Display for Latitude E6510
Genuine Windows 7 Ultimate, 64-bit, w/ media, Latitude, English
    Windows 7 XP Mode,Opti/PWS/Lat/Vost
Dell Wireless 375 Bluetooth Module, Dell Latitude E
    8X DVD+/-RW for Latitude E-Family
Light Sensitive Webcam and Noise Cancelling Digital Array Mic for E6510
Dell Webcam Central Software Dell Latitude/Mobile Precision
    Intel WiFi Link 6300 (802.11a/g/n 3X3) 1/2 MiniCard, Dell Latitude/Mobile Precision
Latitude On Flash for Latitude Notebooks
6-cell (60Wh) Primary Battery for Latitude
    Intel Core i7 Processor

Even on a fresh install it would freeze? Are all of your drivers up-to-date?

    Yes,

I went to the dell site and updated everything. The only problem driver I had was bluetooth.

When skype is installed, it keeps opening a new btstackproxy every 5 seconds and doesn't close the old one.

An easy to determine if it’s a software or hardware problem is to boot into safe mode with networking, surf the web and see if the system locks up. If it doesn't then obviously it’s a software problem. Then if you feel up to it, use msconfig to disable all non OS startup programs, reboot, test for lockups, any enable startup programs one at a time until you find the culprit.

Ok, this may be unrelated, but running Linux on my e6510 I've also noticed that system would freeze eveny now and then for couple seconds. Logs showed that it was usb driver complaining about bluetooth, so I've turned bluetooth off in bios and freezes stopped.
This might be problem with Linux kernel as well, but I guess it's worth trying.

I just reinstalled windows 7... I'll see if this would fix the issue.

Anyone running WoW with Win 7 64-bit and NVS 3100M? My computer freezes while I browse the web or it is idle, but WoW makes it freeze 99%... I've talked to Microsoft and they think it's some sort of driver problem. And I ran quite comprehensive diagnostics test with Dell and nothing seems to be wrong with hardware... such a pain

Also, I'm talking about 100% freeze, not a lockup for sometime and going back to normal. Only thingut I can do is a force shut down..
