svl I know you don't overclock your GPU when playing games, do you overclock your CPU at all?

No, at the moment I only overclock for benching... though there's still a bit headroom in most games.

I also overclock the CPU for encoding... but I don't do such things often atm.

Cool so what is the vantage GPU score on stock then? I'm guessing around 11-12k?

With the old drivers (11.3 if I'm correct) I got 11k on stock clocks. Haven't benched on stock with the newer drivers yet.

Edit: If you're interested I can do a stock run during the next days.

In your own time mate. Just contemplating whether the massive performance increase outweighs my reluctance to make the leap from green team to red...
You know, got to have a backup plan incase the 470m mod doesn't work as well as everyone here would like.

First of all lets see whether your 470m works... then you can still decide to jump on the 6970m train :D Good luck!!

Strong business, Svl7. How is that 6970m for everyday use, excluding benching. Getting harder to resist by the day.

Thank you! I have no issues at all in everyday use, Powerplay works perfectly and games don't even need an overclock even though I max them out. In some games you'll have to keep an eye on the power usage from time to time when you start overclocking, especially when you have an extreme processor... but I didn't run into issues so far.

I'm idling at about 45-50°C since it got a bit hotter outside. I definitely like this card :D

Ok here is my finals. I will not be pushing it any more but im pleased with my scores. I cant reach the number 1 spot for the GTX 460 on 3dMark Vantage but I took #1 for 3dMark06 but I have secured the #5 spot for CPU score. Also Im sorry I turned off cpu-z before i remembered to save a clip. I was running 26 across all cores.

Hey everyone, just got a new M15x with a 5850, just ran 3dmark vantage and it scored P9695 with an overclock of 805mhz on core and 1.050v, I think it did pretty good, I tested it with the 11.4 drivers, does anyone know if the older drivers score better, wanted to reach in the 10k score range. :)

I got the best results with the 11.5 drivers (and hotfix). You'll need to push it a bit more for 10k... keep on the benching and post some screenshots :D

Btw, seeing your signature I'm wondering why you sold the other M15x...?

It's harder to push the machine since the ambient temperatures are getting hotter day by day... I managed to squeeze some more points in 3dM11:

No luck with benching and setFSB so far... only BSODs, a lot of BSODs.

Did you guys tried increasing the RAM voltage or setting it to unlocked mode? I increased my RAM voltage to 1.6V but I needed to reset the BIOS afterwards (coin battery)... didn't boot.

Thanks, svl7. I think I'm at or very close to the card's limits without supplemental cooling, which I haven't used yet, but I've thought that for awhile and yet each driver release has given up a few more points. I will revisit Vantage, but I'm on the trail of a 6970M. You've convinced me to try one while waiting for the M18x situation to stabilize.

You'll almost certainly need to increase voltage to 1.15v to reach the upper limits of your card's capabilities. You'll also need TriXX. Sapphire Technology - TriXX Tweak Utility. Good luck; watch your temps.

I can mod you one or give you one of the ones I used on my 5850m. But first of all make sure what clocks/voltage you want and test whether the system runs completely stable with them.

You can also easily mod a vbios yourself, the Rev wrote a nice summary here.

Bear in mind that TriXX allows a .10v increase in voltage, so your vbios does not need to exceed 1.05v in order to reach the 5850m's max voltage of 1.15v. And a 1.05v card runs noticeably cooler than a 1.15v card in normal use.

I was running 800/1100 @ 1.1 stable in bc2, vantage, and 3dm11. Load temps at 86c, too hot for 24/7 use imo. So I dropped it back down to 725/1000 stock vcore. I was unable to hit 800/1000 on stock vcore and 750 was no go either.

    Here are my 800/1100 runs.

This looks promising! You should be able to hit 21k as well with your CPU.

@Roliath: You could get 10k vantage GPU with this voltage when adjusting the clocks a bit... as long as you can keep the machine cool enough. Nice runs!

You're sure it was because of the CPU? Was it during the CPU test?
Recently vantage crashed all the time when I did some benching, during the GPU tests though... but I found out it was because of my CCC settings. Apparently the program didn't like something, but when I set it back to default everything was back to normal.

Most of the recent crashes, the ones that are most frustrating, are happening during the CPU tests and particularly the first one, which is very unusual for me. Traditionally, most CPU crashes tended to occur during the second test. Something is out of whack somewhere in my setup or machine that is very unhappy up around 26x. Maybe it's just worn out. LOL.

Interesting. I was running 26x throughout (90W/80A), and this was ok for the short term Throttlestop mark, and for 3dmark 06. I downloaded Vantage in advance of repasting my CPU - ran it and it crashed. I thought it was heat, but maybe not...

    Of course, with a 260m, I can't blame it on CCC... :)
